I was wondering..I want to go into the graphic design feild of work when I get older, specifically and hopefully, for guitars. My only problem is that I don't think there are any jobs in Michigan that are for designing guitars specifically. It would be cool to work for Fender, but that's in Arizona. I would want to stay in my state, but you know. Anybody know any info on if I can possibly send my drawings to Fender so they can use them instead of moving to Arizona? Or if anybody knows of any guitar manufacturers in Michigan that would also be helpful.

Thanks!!

Why stay in your state? The world is your oyster. :)

Guitar design, I think, comes from more of a luthier/woodworking background rather than a graphic design perspective. Even as a product designer I think you'd need an intimate knowledge of how guitars work and are built before you can really design one. Anyone can sketch a guitar (though some better than others!) :)

But that's not to discourage you, hell go for it man! Would be a pretty wicked career if you get yourself a good niche.

I don't know how old you are but all I'd say is just get into design. All of it. Fashion to architecture, Product to graphic. Buy journals, read blogs, collect things you like for their design. You might discover a love for other fields of design you never gave a second thought to beforehand.

If you really are hell bent on a career in guitar building and design my advice to you, ontop of what I've already suggested would be to get into woodworking and learn about the technical details of guitars. How they work, how they're built, what materials are good or bad and so on.

Hope that's some help... :)

Like writing a book, the easiest route to seeing if this is real for you is to jump in; design and make a few. By the 10th one, (sell them however, give them away) you will have an idea if guitar design is the real you...

...and you will have a portfolio and experience to market.

Sorry I haven't been on or responded, I was on vacation for TWO WEEKS  !!! Thanks you guys, for the advice. I guess your right, It probably would be a good Idea for me to move out of state anyway, the economy is pretty bad in Michigan. I'll just have to look into it more and check it out.

THANKS EVERYONE!!!
:D
