I'm a long time Fender guy, playing only at home these days. And, for what it's worth, I don't use pedals. My amp inventory consists of two vintage Fender amps (62-Concert, 68-Bandmaster), and a Frontman 25r. I have been contemplating the addition of a Fender Mustang, as (notwithstanding the matter of the learning curve, from my limited personal experience having used one), it seems the features and technology offered by these amps, would make one a worth while addition, enabling a broader-expanded range of sounds, not currently available from my current amps.

I had initially considered the Mustang II V.2, as the price is very attractive, a very minor investment, for what you get. However, in pursing insight from Mustang users, reviewing this site and others on the subject, it seems many consider the Mustang III the way to go, over the II.

In seeking feedback, to a couple questions; Is it reasonable in thinking a Mustang will in fact be an appropriate addition? And, second, if the answer to the first question is a YES, should I spend a little more and get the Mustang III.

Hi Lenny, I have 0 experience with the Mustang's. I have heard/read good things about them though. My 2 centavos would be, you have a Fender Bandmaster so no need to look any further amp-wise IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian) :D 8)

On one hand, consider that the Mustang amps are likely on their last leg - the Mustang Floor has already been discontinued - and that there hasn't been any updates to Fender FUSE for years. If getting a Mustang III or higher, that might not matter as much, as you can do most things from the amp panel, but for Mustang I or II, FUSE is a must to get more than the basics out of the amp.

On the other hand, if you want to wait and see what Fender comes out with to replace the Mustang amps, there's no telling how long you'll have to wait. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.

On the gripping hand, Fender isn't the only choice in SS modeling amps either. Vox VTX hybrids are not as long in the tooth, and competitively priced. And for Peavey Vypyr VIP, you get around twice as many amp models as for the Mustang.

(Disclosure: I have a Mustang II. In the basement, next to other purchases I wasn't pleased with and ended up not using. YMMV, and others are very pleased with their Mustang amps. But they're not for everyone.)

How does that kind of amp perform at low (kids asleep upstairs) volume levels?

To answer question 1 - yes, since these amps have a ton of effects and features built-in, you will likely be able to dial up a broader-expanded range of sounds, not currently available from your current amps, especially if you add the optional EXP-1 expression pedal.

Question 2 - yes, personally I would spend the couple of extra dollars to get a LOT more of an amp. It's like night and day. Go with an M3 if you can afford it.

And to speak of the other modeling amps available out there, IMO if you like Fender amps, this is the one to get. The others I've tried are fun, but I don't think any modeling amp does as good of a job at modeling Fender amps as the Mustang series does.

A couple of years ago, I went and bought a Mustang II Vol.2 at Guitar Center and returned it the very next day. Sounded too sterile for my tastes and I just could not figure out the presets on the fuse software. I guess they're a hit with kids but for us old school guys, they're a P.I.T.A! I'll stick with my Fender Roc-Pro 700. At least that has a tube preamp in it and sounds much better than any modeling amp.

if if for just playing at home at low volumes, even the 1 is good enough. At 100 bucks, it's truly a minimal investment.

Hi Lenny,
You and I are in similar situations. I wound up with Mustang 3 because the amp does not depend on fuse and a computer to change all but the most basic settings. There is also a jack for my headphones which allows me to play as loud as I want while others are sleeping , watching TV, or just don't want to hear it.
There are clean amp settings that sound fine as is . and if you want some reverb or tremolo you can add them on the fly. HTH John.E

I've been really happy with my Yamaha THR-10C modeling amp. Lightweight and portable (can run on batteries or AC adapter, which is included), some effects onboard (reverb, tremolo, chorus, some others), and a nice set of very responsive models - a very good Deluxe model, a nice boutique Class A, a decent Marshall, and a couple of others. Goes from bedroom practice levels to loud enough without much difficulty. Has a USB port to connect to a computer / DAW. might be worth your while to check it out.

I have a MIII and MIV (both v2) for a year now, and use them with the Android REMUDA app! REMUDA does things FUSE lacks. I rarely use FUSE! The MIII's and MIV's LCD panels and Data Wheels provide great access to deep Amp control and Full Preset editing. REMUDA adds a lot more!

The MIII and MIV amps, provide outstanding results when you customize the Deep Amp settings and tweak them to your needs via the Sag, Bias, Noise Gate, Cab Sims, and more for each Modeled Amp (Basic Studio Pre-amp excluded)!

If you are willing to endure this learning curve, the Mustang Amps are for you! If not look elsewhere! Once customized they are amazing. Stock they are okay.

The MIII 1x12 is terriffic. With the optional 4btn fsw and EXP-1 Expression pedal it is a blast! The MIV includes the 4btn fsw and accepts the EXP -1 Expression pedal. The MIV also has discrete Two Channel (stereo) FX Loop Send/Return if that may be useful for you. The onboard 44 FX in 4 Banks (Stomp, Mod, Delay, Reverb) is an incredible bundled value.

I love my Mustangs! I recently added the Yamaha THR10C for arms reach battery powered convenience!

I appreciate all the feedback I have received. As an old guy, and since I don't use pedals, I realize the more simplistic experience with my tube amps, pretty much, plug it in, turn it on, and adjust the tone controls. As I have had the opportunity to spend some time playing an MIII, I realize too, there is a learning curve, and patients needed in order to reach a level of understanding to achieve the capability and therefore, benefits of a modeling amp. That's my view anyway. Which, the matter of the learning curve has been something I have considered, as the challenge I face. So, I'm still contemplating, but close to taking the next step, with a visit to my local GC. As a note, in regard to one comment, I am not restricted to what volume level I play, so that does not enter into what amp to consider.

When you next revisit the MIII, go straight to the basic 17 modeled amps! These are without any FX! These are found in factory default Memory Slots 83-99. As the Amp always powers on to Preset #00 simply spin the Data Wheel counter clockwise to step down to to the Basic Modeled Amps. As each modeled amp by default has its own inherent Gain, Volume, and other parameters, they will not be at the same volume level nor sound the same. These can easily be Gain and Volume balanced by saving customized versions of the Presets should you wish. None of these basic amps have any FX enabled.

Thanks for the info...everybit of insight from Mustang users is appreciated. I have bookmarked the wikia link to the Fender Mustang "Quick Guide", from a post in the Mustang Amp section of this forum. This kind of information should be quite useful to guys like me.

Once you try out the MIII, don't leave the store without trying a Peavey VIP 2 or 3 for comparison.

No they're not. They're all all FX, emulated digitally. Without any additional FX on top of that, perhaps.
