I have a 2013 Fender American Special Stratocaster in Two-Tone Sunburst.

... And today I noticed that the Two-Tone Sunburst for said guitar is no longer an option on the Fender website.

Assuming that it was discontinued, would the value of the American Special Stratocaster in Two-Tone Sunburst go up or down over time?

Baby_ItstheBLUES, in this instance your guess would be as good as mine lol.

Color speaking ; not going up not going down , people buying American Special are not collector IMO.

Guitar going down.

Few Stratocasters will ever be equivalent to a Rembrandt, a Dali, or a Van Gogh. You've got a $1200 guitar that's worth about $850 today. Two years from now it'll be worth $650. Deal with it.

Years have taught me that unless you have mega bucks to collect the best of anything, just be happy with what you have because you bought it and now you own it. I have several guitars I consider my "treasures" but I could replace them 100x over on Reverb or eBay. Fender, or anyone else, will reissue anything highly sought if they really do get rare and there's a market. Thinking guitars as money in the bank, is almost as silly as thinking you better buy that gun now before there won't be any.

Total non sequitur.

Nobody's ever considered banning the sale or possession of electric guitars.

Southern Somalia and Northern Mali have both done that.

And for older electric guitars with any ivory on them at all, it will become illegal to sell or buy them here in 'Tis of Thee too.

As others have already suggested, with production model instruments the color really has little to do with any resale value. You may get an extra $10 - $20 on the used market, but that's simply because it's a sunburst...has nothing to do at all with whether or not the finish was discontinued on a specific model.

Likewise, only being a 2013, you really should expect ANY degree of collector's value at all...again, as others have already suggested, dude - it's only a 2/3 year old guitar. When the instrument is 30 years old, you might start to see some return on your "investment", however with something like an American Special, it seems really unlikely. If you search thru these forums (and others), you'll likely see that there are a great many factors involved when it comes to any sense of "value" on the vintage market...age, condition, rarity, popularity, etc., etc.. Consider the Mexican Standard Strats for a moment...they're great instruments (I happen to own 6 of them), but the truth is that it's VERY unlikely they'll ever have any serious value, simply because there's sooooooooooooooooo many of them out there. Even today, a 25 year old MIM isn't really worth any more (or less) than a 2 year old MIM in comparable condition. Same goes for your American Special...there's just nothing truly exceptional about those instruments to suggest they're gonna have any significant degree of collector's value.

At the risk of being horribly blunt, if you're looking at your American Special as some type of financial investment, quite frankly, you bought the guitar for the wrong reason...you'd be far better of with T bills. For a guitar player, it's a fine instrument, but you really shouldn't expect to get any significant portion of that investment back over time. With only rare exceptions (Custom Shop for example), guitars today are a lot like cars in that they usually loose a SIGNIFICANT degree of their value the moment you "drive them off the lot". Even with American made instruments, as anything other than musical instruments, they're a pretty poor way to invest your money.

Just my own opinions.

Agreed.
Keep in mind that rarity alone does not increase the value of anything - there also has to be a demand.
How many people are there likely to be that want that particular combination, and will not go for a slightly different color, nor a slightly different model nor a slightly different year? Was there some popular artist that played exactly this combination?

Fender is in the business of selling dreams. To young people, the dreams of becoming a guitar hero, and to old people, dreams of the guitar hero you never became. The latter market segment is dying out faster than the guitars they have bought are, and the surplus of used guitars is growing.
