I've just started playing regularly and seriously again, and I've noticed some action issues with my Fenders. I have some older Japanese models that I love, but I noticed that they have a slight string buzz when playing-some with the open high E string, others across the fretboard. It isn't enough to make the strings 'choke', and the strings still ring fine through an amp. But I don't want ANY buzz at all.

I have Dan Erlewine's 'Guitar Player (Magazine) Repair Guide, and he says in the book that sometimes a little buzz is acceptable. Still, I've raised the 'relief' (loosening the truss rod to provide a bit of 'upbow') and/or raised the bridges, still I notice it. The guitars have a 'vintage' radius (7.5") and vintage style frets. I'm beginning to think they need a new (higher) nut or a shim in the neck pocket in order to raise the action. Any hints or recommendations?

No, getting a new guitar ISN'T an option!

One of the kindest things a player can do for themself is have a good tech. Having one's instruments in fine trim is important to the playing-soul.

Think of it as having a good mechanic for your vehicle.
