Avenue Guitars in Edmonchuck was having a 20% off sale on all stringed instruments.
In recent years I have been largely immune to the deleterious effects of GAS (except for amps of course, there's no cure for that) ... but the idea of having something a little out of the ordinary was enough to make me reach for my wallet.

A quick rundown:
New 2011 model that had lots of dust and fingerprints on it but no nicks or scratches
Sitka top.
Indian Rosewood, back, sides and headstock.
Ebony board.
27" scale length
String set - 0.016 - 0.070
Tuning - B,E,A,D,F#,B

Congrats on the temporary relief of your GAS! I bet those are words you've never heard before!

Big Hard Sun

My friend Kev was with me when I bought it. We were both looking for 12-string guitars and there was one that was quite nice. If he hadn't bought it I would have. There being no other 12s in the store that spoke to me, I got the baritone instead. We came back to my house and threw this together in about an hour or so. He's singing melody and playing the 12. I'm singing harmony and adding some rhythm with the baritone but not out-front-ishly. I also added a droning bass and just a smidgeon of a Tele with a little Uni-Vibe over the chorus sections. I'll try my hand at a sound sample another time with just the baritone so you get a better idea of the sound.

Sounds great, and nice new guitar that's like none of your others. I guess 20% off is the magic number. I have a 20% off coupon from a local shop, that will get used this week. Not using it, would be like throwing money away. That's what I'll tell the wife!

Nice guitar. 8) You know, I don't think I've ever got to mess around with a baritone guitar. I do have a 6 string bass (like a Fender Bass VI,) though. Sometimes, those are referred to as a baritone, but I'm not sure if that is an accurate description or not.

My Baritone is not a bass. The 5th string is tuned the same as the 6th string on a normal acoustic. The 6th string is tuned to a B. So, sort of like a 7-string except the 1st string (E) is not present and the G string becomes F#.

A 4-string bass goes a whole octave lower than a guitar and a 6-string bass expands that both up and down from a standard 4.

My guitar sounds similar to a detuned acoustic guitar except that it is severely detuned. The longer scale length and heavier strings keep it from sounding like trash ... if it were just a detuned guitar. The sound is guitar-like but deep. If you try to play a song that you usually play on a standard guitar it will sound different. Good but different. The timbres are not the same.

Here's a quick example of the guitar by itself.

Baritone Clip

I'm plugged straight into the interface so no f/x used.
I'm not a fan of Taylor's Expression System.
I've tried a number of guitars equipped with it and it always takes a lot of tweaking to get anything even close to a good sound out of it. This was the best I could do on short notice. It is a reasonable facsimile of the guitar's natural sound. I might try using a 57 or a 58 in tandem with the pickup next time.

That's a Tip Top Taylor, Matt.
Great sound, song, and samples. That little jazz piece that you played really shows off the guitar's ability. Thanks for that.

Yah, I got it not too bad but I always feel like the Taylor ES sounds like the guitar is being played inside a washing machine or some other sort of small diameter thingamajig. Like you're standing next to the open end of a 12" pipe and the guitar is being played in another room at the other open end of the pipe 20 feet away on the other side of a wall. There's a sort of hollow sounding "Ooooooh" to the tone. Like a Wah pedal stuck in one spot. That's always my biggest challenge with using the ES. My '02 Limited has a Fishman Blender system and it is MUCH more natural sounding.

It really sucks being the huge, monster fan of Taylor guitars as I am and at the same time hating their electronics.

Wasn't sure if you would get the joke, Matt. Way to go. - Tip Top Tailors (Canadian retailer since 1909 for those who aren't familiar with the name). Just a little Canuck humour. :D

Cheers!
