This X-Mas , my wife is letting me buy a new Acoustic to add to my collection but, I'm only allowed a $200.00 limit. I've been looking at the Epiphone Dove artist which I've heard a lot of good things about along with the Fender CD140S in Mahogany. Any suggestions guys ?

If you already have a steel string, how about considering a classical / nylon string, and give fingerpicking a workout?

But anyhow, I would not neglect to look at the used section of your local stores. Or even online directories - Guitar Center managers can be amenable to drop their restocking fee and let you "order to try" used guitars delivered from other GC stores. Just ask in advance.
There are a lot of good used acoustic guitars out there, even in the $200 price range. Many were first-and-only guitars for people who never became players, and may only need a good cleaning to be as good as new, which they really are.

I own this acoustic and can attest that this is a great deal :

I agree 100% with what arth posted. Also, most acoustics in that price range are not going to be set up very well, if at all. So use your ears and pick one that sounds great. The set up can be adjusted post purchase.

I personally have a Yamaha that's about 15 to 20 years old. It sounded amazing but sat unused for most of that time due to improper set up. Just last year I finally took the time to set it up and now it sits in my living room as my practice guitar.

Good luck and Happy Holidays. :D

I dunno, man. Where I'm at, I would hold off for a while and get a bigger budget.

I'm not sure if you can even get one even used for $200, and be marginally playable, but what about a 12-string? That could be something for a different sound as well.

Guys, thanks to all for the advice. I'm not into classical so a nylon string is out of the question. I already have a Fender CD60CE in Mahogany so, I don't need another electric/acoustic . However Paul did come up with a great idea about my getting a 12 string. I did look and Epiphone does offer one for the $200.00 range which the reviews are really good . So I think I know what I'm going to do some more research on. So right now it's between that and the Hummingbird Artist.

Yamaha acoustics are almost impossible to beat for the price, I'm sure GC has a great x-mas deal on one.

If they have a decent 12 string for $200, I'd like to know about that one, too. That would be cool to knock around with, maybe even record without going further into serious debt because of gear.

I'm in line with the general consensus here.... I don't think getting just another $200.00 steel string acoustic guitar is the way to go. Get something different.....a smaller body or a 12 string, but I think the best advice is to take that $200.00 and put it aside while you do your research and save up for a better quality acoustic.

Nylon strings are actually great for blues playing. Besides finger picking, they are actually great for playing lead and flat picking with a nice warm, soft tone. I had a nylon string I played into the proverbial ground until there was almost nothing left of it (haha). Just a thought ...

My experience indicates that a new laminated body sounds nothing like a seasoned solid timber body. Keep on the lookout for the guitar you want. Got me an ARIA 6711 1968 vintage not long ago for less than $A 200.00 (including postage). Made in Japan, solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides, looks good, sounds just great, low action 1.5mm @12 fret also has a 45mm wide fret board which suits my short fat fingers perfectly.
I say there is a guitar out there for you, don't compromise.

Rock too:

A certain red-headed stranger from Texas uses a nylon strong in interesting ways as well.

The esteemed Mr Nelson isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I've found if you look past the reedy voice and the clouds of cannabis, you'll see that his guitar playing is anything but average. He plays a jazz-based chords, comps and solos on an electrified classical guitar, ostensibly while playing country music.

While I grew up listening to (and loving) Willie's music, I never really appreciated his guitar-playing skills until I saw him play at a Tax Relief Benefit show for Clifford Antone in the early 1990's. The show was (predictably) blues-oriented, and Willie came out and handily mopped the other players up, playing BLUES rather than his normal setlist (of which we got an 8-song mini-concert right in the middle of the Blues Show). At the end of the night, there was a cuttin' heads contest, of which Willie beat all comers, including some pretty gnarley dudes...the man has chops.

Back to your guitar:

I agree with the above poster(s) who recommended Yamaha acoustics, whether 6- or 12-string. Excellent instruments, and often easily found within your price point at the local hock shops and used sections of guitar stores.

What about one of the sub-$200 parlor guitars? I liked the Recording King, Ibanez and Gretch models -- all around $150 and fun to play. I didn't buy one, but played a bunch in the store.

In the end, I bought one of these because GC had a great sale on Labor day and my girlfriend (who I play with sometimes) liked it better and kicked in some cash to help me out (kind of an anniversary gift):

Maybe you can find one closer to your budget on holiday sale somewhere. I like the guitar well enough -- I'm not that big so a full dreadnought doesn't work for me, no matter how good they sound.

All guitars make me happy -- including the piece of crap 3/4 size thrift store one I bought (https://youtu.be/ssrQwg2hsEw) -- find a guitar in your price range that feels good and enjoy it!

:)
