I was saddened to learn this morning that Scott Weiland, former lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velevet Revolver, had passed away at 48.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/scott-weiland-dead-at-48-20151204

I saw STP open for the Stones a number of years ago and was really impressed with the band's sound and energy. Weiland had his personal demons, but it is still sad to see another charismatic front man from the Grunge era pass on before his time. I hope his loved ones can find comfort in what is sure to be a difficult time.

Yeah, heard about it last night. At first I thought it might have been an internet hoax, considering some of the problems he had with drugs and all in the past. Sadly, it was not the case. :( I thought STP were a great band when they came out. I had their first two albums and played the hell of them. R.I.P. Scott.

This is sad indeed. STP and Velvet Revolver both were high drive bands, and Scott Weiland gave the world much. And 48 is way too young, dammit.

Personally, I think it is insensitive of the police to arrest Tommy Black (bassist) right after that for possession. I think it would have been more humane just to gather evidence right now, and let people who are in a difficult situation come to terms with what happened first.

Scott was one of the best singers to come out of the Grunge era and I was a huge STP fan. But to be honest , I saw this coming with his personal demons getting the best of him. I knew it was only a matter of time . He pretty much burned his bridges with both STP, and Velvet Revolver who I thought were one of the best bands to come down the pike in years, but he blew it with his drug use.

It was sad news indeed and so is the heroin epidemic that seems to
be spreading and getting worse instead of better. Just sayin'...

Those first three STP albums are all great (especially "Purple"). Every track is good. STP is one of those bands that when I listen to them, I always think to myself "why do I not listen these guys more often than I do??" RIP, Scott...

You are right about the heroin epidemic, Mike. Not long ago I saw a report on TV how 'chasing the dragon' is not limited to the big city. Dealers and users have spread the habit to the small towns that are becoming a major market. :(

I liked his vocals a lot. Really good rock singer, up there with the best. But it's just plain sad and I think his 2nd wife made a lot of strong points in the letter she wrote after his death. This is a time to pause and reflect on what art is worth and what it should cost (not someone's daddy).

Link to the letter  http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/scott-weiland-s-family-dont-glorify-this-tragedy-20151207

Excerpt:

This is the final step in our long goodbye to Scott. Even though I felt we had no other choice, maybe we never should have let him go. Or maybe these last few years of separation were his parting gift to us – the only way he could think to soften what he knew would one day crush us deep into our souls. Over the last few years, I could hear his sadness and confusion when he'd call me late into the night, often crying about his inability to separate himself from negative people and bad choices. I won't say he can rest now, or that he's in a better place. He belongs with his children barbecuing in the backyard and waiting for a Notre Dame game to come on. We are angry and sad about this loss, but we are most devastated that he chose to give up.
Noah and Lucy never sought perfection from their dad. They just kept hoping for a little effort. If you're a parent not giving your best effort, all anyone asks is that you try just a little harder and don't give up. Progress, not perfection, is what your children are praying for. Our hope for Scott has died, but there is still hope for others. Let's choose to make this the first time we don't glorify this tragedy with talk of rock and roll and the demons that, by the way, don't have to come with it. Skip the depressing T-shirt with 1967-2015 on it – use the money to take a kid to a ballgame or out for ice cream.

Disclaimer:
I was never a huge "grunge" fan. I liked a lot of individual songs, and I think there were a lot of talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the lot.

Weiland was an amazing singer. I wasn't some kind of Ubër-fan of STP or Velvet Revolver, but he added dimensions to both of those bands that were unmistakable. Super talented guy.

...but was anybody truly shocked about this?
All over the world, his obituary had already been written, just like the old celebrity who has hit their 90's. It was just a matter of updating the last paragraph and printing it up.

He hurt the people around him, he destroyed relationships, disappointed friends, family, fans and band members alike...and he damaged the faith of his children.

I'll miss his music amd his talent, but (unfortunately) I can't bring myself to mourn the man himself. I hope he has peace when he's resurrected.

Could you at least have the decency to wait until after the funeral before badmouthing him? And keep your personal doctrines personal?

How not to respond to news of celebrity overdoses

I'm not dissing him, I'm stating the facts that were much more eloquently stated by his ex-wife.

Buddy Holly, Richie Valets and JP Richardson died in a plane crash. Eddie Cochran died in a car accident. Otis Redding died in a plane crash. Patsy Cline died in a plane crash. Freddie King had a heart attack at 45. Jeff Buckley drowned with no alcohol or drugs in his system. SRV died in a helicopter accident. Doyle Bramhall I died of a heart attack.

Those are tragedies.

A guy with long-term drug problems, who had been given dozens of chances, who purposely and selfishly squandered personal and professional relationships left and right?
Well, that's sad...but it's only a tragedy that he never got clean and sober long enough to have a good relationship with his kids...and unfortunately, anybody who didn't see this coming needs a long, tough life lesson.

He was a great singer, songwriter and performer. Sadly, he did this to himself.

And as far as my "personal doctrines"? That's rich, coming from an arrogant twit who seems to think anything he believes, practices or has philosophied about is gospel, (or at least the gospel of Arth).

I was wishing peace upon him.
