Wow, what a surprise by some family members... As it turns out, a friend that of my relatives knew had an early 2000's Alvarez acoustic guitar. It sat unplayed in its hardshell case as the guy gave it up. One thing led to another and the guy gave it to one of my family members who had mentioned me to him - - - FREE!!

I verified the model and serial numbers on Alvarez's website...

Model: RD20
Serial: F212240333
Date: Dec 2002 (according to Alvarez)

The condition of the guitar is amazing for its age & playability. It looks as though the previous owner, bought it in 2002, fumbled around with it, got frustrated, and put it away for a long time. Got back into it, doodled around with it a little more, got more frustrated, etc...etc... The strings were absolutely horrendous originally, and thankfully there was an unopened pack of D'Addario 12-54 Phosphor Bronze strings in the compartment in the case, so I quickly changed the strings, even though the D'Addario's are dead and slightly tarnished due to age. What a heck of a guitar for being FREE!!!

It's hard to argue with free. A little wipedown and oiling, a setup and new strings, and that's going to be a great guitar, I'm sure!
Congrats!

And also, that's a delightfully clean pedal board you have there! :)

Thanks... Tomorrow, I plan on hitting the music stores to get some good quality strings for the Alvarez and clean it up and restring it.

My homemade pedalboard is nothing special... I don't really have a need for dozens and dozens of pedals. All you see (Left to Right) is the main Fender Frontman 65r's footswitch, a BYOC Classic Overdrive (TS-808 clone) that I built from their online kits, and a Dunlop Cry Baby wah pedal.

Snarling, vicious, hard rock/metal, guitar tone: Frontman's footswitch to the gain channel.
Overdriven tone, but yet subtle, with just the right amount of bite: BYOC Classic Overdrive.
Wah pedal: For whenever I venture into Hendrix's territory or Clapton on "White Room" or Terry Kath (Chicago) on "25 or 6 to 4".

Have an Alvarez myself. They offer a wide range of types and prices. The mid-priced and higher end ones are good guitars...can't speak for the entry level.

Thanks, guys...

From what I understand on Alvarez's website and other various websites on acoustic guitars, back a decade or so, Alvarez came out with the Regent Series - RDxx model numbers... as their entry level acoustics. I believe they had RD8, RD10, and RD20, respectively. Even for an inexpensive entry model, it has a spruce top and mahogany back and sides, and rosewood fretboard.

I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with brand new strings on it!

Free is my favorite thing, I have an Alvarez AD70. I really like it, it's very bright and sounds good against my band mates Martin (with more mid to low end). The D'Addario PBs are good and the 12-54 work well on mine.

Update:

I stopped at Guitar Center and picked up some Ernie Ball Earthwood strings to try (all they had were 11-52's). They were only $4.99 so I thought to myself, "what the hell", you know what I mean? Gotta love "Black Friday" sales...

Anyway, Um... They are waaaay too bright for my taste, but being 11's, they enable me to fly on the fretboard. I'll leave them on for a few days or a week and then go back to D'Addario 12-52's.

If you ever feel the need to splurge on strings, I can't say I have ever tried better sounding strings than Thomastik-Infeld strings, either for electric or acoustic. For classical, there are some better choices, but for metal strings, they make their own strings from start to finish, unlike most of the string manufacturers who just wrap and ball premade wire. And they do sound awesome.
But "splurge" is the right word, as they cost 3-4 times as much, and don't last any longer.
