I bought my Les Paul new in 1975. I don't believe I would have kept it this long if it "sucked". I have a number of different guitars, Fender, Gretsch, and others. They each have their particular sound. That's why its good to own several different types of guitars. But suck? I would think that term would be used by someone who has no idea what they're talking about.

Most Pauls are heavy, but I bought the Vintage Mahogany Studio with the chambered body which is much lighter (and much less expensive). Has the AlNiCo Burstbucker Pro p/u's, too. I bought it for the sound, not the looks.

Different tools for different jobs.

I have owned Fender, gibson, Ibanez, Jackson but I have chosen Fender for mainly one reason the sound/variety of sounds I could get from it, the other guitars were all great but i couldnt get the sound I was wanting from them neither of the 4 named brands were bad quality wise at all..I would discount any advise from others saying a Gibson or any of the other main brands suck...

An LP is heavy, but that's as much a characteristic of it as the Tele's flat-ness or a Precision's split pickup or a '65 Twin Reverb's blackface.

Many different guitars are splendid to and for different folks for different reasons. Make your own decisions after doing your own research.

Personally, 'can play an LP and Tele and Variax and Mosrite on the same day and love each for their uniqueness, without the britches ever getting even slightly bunched up about which is 'better.'

And if you really value having one. Or two or three more guitars, start a coin jar. It works, as long as your desire remains sincere.

I like Les Pauls. I don't have one, but I almost bought a Les Paul Studio last weekend.

I really want to like SGs, but I can never find one that I like. I was playing a Gibson Faded SG Special a few months ago (I had it for a month), and liked the way it sounded acoustically, but I didn't like the bridge pickup at all.

some les pauls are very heavy. some almost 9 lbs but i like others like heavy guitars. i like how it feels like i'm not holding something chinsy. if you want a les paul i would get a wide strap because many players complain of shoulder aches.

There is a reason that the Les Paul model and the Stratocaster model, both from the early 1950's, are still in production today with little changes in basic form. That is because they got it right the first time. Time discards that which is inferior. Les Pauls and Strats are timeless. Thank god some things never change.

+ 1 big time for Paisley Strat.

"everybody says LPs suck / are too heavy to play..."

Then why are there so many around / in production for 56 years / in so many photos and in stores and people's hands? Personally, they do NOT suck, are NOT too heavy to play.

"Too heavy" sounds kind of babyish. 'Ever carried a rifle and pack for too many hours? An air nail gun all day? And then say a freaking 9 or 10 pound guitar is too heavy?

Huh?? Repeat, HUH?

Play, make your own decisions. Besides that, 'everybody' is oft wrong about a lot of stuff. Decades of personal experience verified it.

Mine's almost 10 pounds--and I've played heavier ones.

there are other guitars out there heavier than Les Pauls though.
