Does anyone have any experience with baritone guitars? I enjoy playing bass and guitar, I'm thinking about trying one... sounds interesting. Is it very different from alternate tuning on a standard guitar?

Here's some information that would be best helpful, I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baritone_guitar

Most times, a baritone is tuned down a third or more but in the same intervals as on a standard guitar. Which means that if capoed, it can be used like a regular guitar.
One important thing to note is that as the scale length increases, the maximum amplitude of a string (how far it moves when it vibrates) also increases. Which means you need a higher action.
If you're a bass player, you may be fine with that. But many will be better served with a 7-string, which adds another deeper bass string without affecting the action of the other strings, nor how far you have to stretch your fingers near the nut.

Or just set up a six string for use with strings from a seven string set.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I had been looking for a baritone for quite some time. The idea was to have three guitars in the Stratocaster design -- a standard 6-string, a Stratocaster XII and a Stratocaster Sub-Sonic baritone, but the Sub-Sonic was too hard to come by and too expensive when you found one.

I went with the Squier Bass VI which could be set up as a baritone, but I prefer it as is, tuned as a bass and plays like a guitar.

Have you ever got your 12 string? I recall you've been looking for one for a long time. I take it you never had any issues with the Squier Bass VI, either? You might remember before you got one, I had got one (I was on a different account back then as CPL) and the neck was completely screwed up on it. I wound up getting the Schecter Ultra VI instead, but the funny thing is I haven't really even messed with it in a long time. Sometimes, it seems the idea have having something winds up being more than it is when you get it. :P Then again, I'm sure it will find a purpose sooner or later.

Meshuggah guitar by Ibanez. Longer scale 29", I like the sound of this guitar.

Yes, got the Strat XII last spring. The S/N says it's about seven years old but it looked brand new when I got it. No scratches on the pickguard, just perfect.

I remember your problems with the Bass VI. I would be very irritated if I waited for months for delivery only to get a bass with so many problems. The biggest problem with my Bass VI is the same as most others -- buzz on the low E string. I haven't attempted any mods because it isn't serious enough for what I'm using it for. Otherwise, the build quality was great. I just need to find more time for my music. I'm going to log another 10K - 15K miles in business travel before the end of the year.

That looks pretty cool, how steep is the learning curve? It's like a completely different animal.

It took a little bit to get used to my 5 string bass so I'm guessing about the same. Baritone guitars appear more interesting when you add 2 strings to a longer scale.
A Christmas list addition .

With that long scale, super-thick strings, and Floyd Rose locking, you must get a sustain that lasts until next Friday.

Here is a video. Work on this rif and by the time you get it you will have thought of 10 more lol. This percussive style of metal is aggressive but somehow satisfying. The Fender touch on a metal tribute guitar of this type would turn the metal world (as small as it is ) on it's ear. At about 1:50 you can hear the guitarist playing higher up on the fretboard, very interesting sound IMHO YMMV ( to quote my favorite Martian).

That stuff is pretty gnarly, (a sound is worth a thousand words) now that I hear the baritone I get it. It's like a detune on steroids. Where are all the metal guys, you are right, a good promotion and everyone would want it, it sure adds a new dimension. It's crazy how it sounds on the higher end, its very distinctive. I'll add it to the "when I get the cash for it" list.

I've had a "get it when I have have the cash list" that goes back almost 30 years. I should call it "yeah, if I win the Lotto list." :P

You said it.
It really hurts when you run into someone with all the cool stuff that doesn't play . I ran into someone recently with a huge, humidity/temp controlled cabinet. It had about 30 guitars in it. He told me they were on a "guitar collectors must have list" he found. Sitting beside it was an old tired no name classical. I said "pick it up let's hear something". I thought he must be a player with all the gear, but he told me I don't play I just noodle around on the cheap one once in awhile. He wouldn't even open it up for me. It was heartbreaking.
But i guess its not the guitar its the player, Gilmore could shred on a Hondo II.
