Good question, Mike.

Although, as I mentioned earlier, I do not have the answer, I will add this. As you and I know from our military experience, adversaries play war games and governments are quick to throw threats. All the while we keep a close eye on them and they on us. The only thing we can do is be vigilant. We may not always know who they are, nor can we be sure of their next move, but we can let them know we are here, and that we will alway have a next move, and we will make their task so hard it will make it difficult if not impossible to succeed as it has in the past or does in the present.

USA has had it's home grown terrorists, and so has Canada. They have been around for many years. One night in the 80s I was working a newsroom when a threat to blow up Vancouver Island's oil depot reached my ears upon answering the phone. The threat followed a manifesto being read. I didn't panic because we were used to threats or announcements of one. The crew was ready and respective authorities were alerted. I'm sure the local Navy and Army bases were too. After answering face to face questions the cops told me they were familiar with the problem organization. I don't know what the cops did, but, fortunately, the depot and the public stayed safe, unlike the hydro station blown up earlier on the Island, or the Air India Jumbo Jet explosion from Vancouver. Even earlier, our staff were escorted out of a TV station on the prairies. Mounties and special dogs searched because of bomb threats. It was because we ran a story about radical Quebec separatists putting the public at harm with bombs in mailboxes. Back then Armories had theft of armament, and much is still missing. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-11520154
Since then we have seen shootings in our Capital while the government was in session. Terrorist plots have been foiled and on and on.

Crimes of various nature put the public in harm's way daily. In all the cases I mentioned, there are lone wolves, vicious groups, and many go unseen or unknown.

Organized crime is still with us. It isn't going away, and terrorists will likely survive as well. After all, both are nothing more than thugs in a power struggle. That is the basic problem and little talk or reasoning will bring it to an end. Both are treated in a similar fashion.

If it's any comfort, it is that history has given us knowledge and tools to squeeze them a little harder. Keeping up with the changes is the hard part.

Terrorism knows no borders, and because of that we have a world full of allies and partners (even some of those who don't always like us). Our team is bigger and stronger in every way. But, as the determined people of France are doing, so will we.

So keep the faith, my friend.

For all those misguided individuals who would even think to do harm to others in order to push an agenda of terrorism or similar cause:

If leaders and their followers are not to be trusted or accepted look to the people. Most often, political, religious, corporate, and other decisions are representative of the few rather than a majority. Often it is a majority of a few.

With this in mind, look to the men, women, and children of the world. Look and listen to their story, get to know them, and you will find peace and love that surrounds us all. Even amongst the differences you will find a common bond. Do not be swayed by those who are on a path that misrepresents the men, women, and children who are the future of the world. Media is not always the voice of the people. It often represents the majority of the few who support the power pundits. Listen and learn from the people in the street. Here you will hopefully find the answer and truth you seek. One can be a tourist in the resort, but you can learn more about a country and culture by walking amongst their people.

The world is at your door. It's not perfect, nothing ever is, but it is on a roll that needs help, and it has more to give than take. Enjoy the love and peace it has to share. Even better, share yourself and contribute to something even bigger . . . making the world a better place by showing you care for others more than yourself. It will come back to you my friend(s). Life is short. If you are young and your life has held misery you have the fortune of knowing that today can be the beginning of of a better life should you decide to make the effort. Many have done this, some are here on this Forum for example. If you are old you have nothing to lose. Set an example for others, perhaps, to improve their lives and to give them the opportunity to live to be old. Believe what you choose, but let others choose their path with compassion.

In the beginning we were all given life, and in the end we were put here to give others life. Life is to be enjoyed with others. If one has been wronged by others it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that this approach is not the path to take. The other path to a better understanding will pay off in spades for the majority and not for a few. Don't blow it!
IMHO.

Note: In light of the Paris and other attacks, I stand for criminals coming to justice. I do not profess to having the answer to this dilemma knowing that education and privlege will not prevent it. The previous is only thoughts I put forward for a more positive take on the matter. Thanks, for reading my ramble and for those helping to make the world a better place whether with music or action - double thanks!

To say "well said" would be an understatement. Hostile acts breed hostile reactions and that is a cycle that only seems to accelerate. I don't know the right answer either and just find it hard to fathom how these things come to pass.

Thank you for your kind words, WI KISSfan.

I'm old enough to have been afraid of the Cold War, and the Cuban missle crisis. Bomb shelters were built, people warned of the end at your doorstep, media used propaganda and falsified figures with government direction, children ducked beneath school desks, rioting and protests hit the streets, leaders threatened, and much more. I volunteered for the forces at 17 in light of Vietnam. It was fear, not vengeance, and not bravery, that made my decision. I was ready, but also fortunate where others were not.

Terrible things have happened throughout history, but we survived, and thrived, and I just wanted to relay that fact.

I believe the human race will unite for the betterment of mankind, and, even as things change, we will prevail. I only hope I have helped in some small way.

Nuff said.

Today is your day. Use it wisely and have a great one.

With the world becoming smaller and smaller, with instant communications and more common languages, I think we will do better than prevail. It will take time before every human is part of the world community and borders and ethnicity lose their meanings, but we are going in that direction. I doubt that I will see it, nor the next generation or two, but I see no other possible future. Even if the Jingoists who fear integration bomb us to smithereens, it will only be a temporary setback. The genie is out of the bottle, and cannot be put back in.
