Just saw this on CNN
A 1962 Gibson J-160E acoustic guitar owned by John Lennon has sold for $2.4 million at auction. The guitar went missing for 50 years. Some guy had it and found similarities with Lennon instrument so he had it checked out, it was verified to be the lost guitar, vola! instant millionaire.(and it wasn't even a Fender, lol)

Anybody care to bet that the guitar will never be played again?

Probably not and probably bought by some rich baby boomer who doesn't even play a note and it will be locked up in some vault or under a glass case. :P

Thanks, for the post eroot64. Imagine the stories if this axe could talk. I'd love to know the full story of how and why it got from A to B.

Maybe Sean (reputed net worth $200 million more or less) has it. Or Yoko?

I wonder what John would say.8)

That's a lot of money for what basically is a conversation piece. Sure, it's worth a little extra because it has a cool history. But millions?
It's not like Lennon's greatness imbued the guitar with magic, or that without that particular guitar there would have been no Beatles. It's like paying millions for one of Ansel Adams' old cameras or one of Julia Child's whisks. It's just an ordinary tool with a history, and while it is a conversation piece, if you pay millions, there's more than one tool involved...

Provenance is everything in every kind of collectable you can think of. See what it does to an already collectable car shown at Pebble Beach. Sends it through the roof!

I wonder how it went "Missing"? That usually means by some nefarious means...

A Beatles drumhead almost matched it at 2.1 million! I paid less than 50 bucks for a plain (no logo) drumhead at today's price. $195 and change buys a repro Beatles' version. (My Strat cost way more and the return will be higher than a cheap drumhead.)

It would appear that Lennon's J-160E was a better buy than Ringo's drum head (after all it's a Gibby); however, the expectation was that it would go at $600,00 - $800,000. Whoops! Dig a little deeper into the pocket.

The drumhead turned out to be the better seller's investment having the larger increased value rate by far. So much for predicting value, even amongst Beatles gear.

In the end, guitars will be sold for more or less in the future. But, unless it's this Beatles' drumhead, IMHO there won't be another like it. That's KRAZY.

For more on the story, and video of Lennon's guitar:

This just boggles the mind. There seems to be many wealthy
collectors out there.

Just found out that the San Diego owner who had earlier purchased Lennon's guitar paid $175 for it.

We just can't comprehend how much money the 1% actually have. They give their children homes we could only dream of as a 1st home wedding present. It makes me think it rather silly for people like most of us to spent $15x on a 50yr old Fender when a new one is basically the same guitar. Is that really a good purchase? The guy that spent $2.5m will surely make money on Lennon's guitar in time . He does now own exactly what it is, doesn't he, and no one else does.

Collectors come in all flavours. For some it's brand and build. For others it wouldn't matter if it was a tin can strung on a broomstick as long as it's rare with or without a history. For some it's one upmanship with "the one who has the most toys wins". Other reasons exist, and hoarders sometimes get lucky. Collecting for sheer profit is a totally different game.

Whatever the reason, collecting is in the DNA, only some have better fortune than others. I wish I had kept my Mantel/Berra/Koufax baseball cards. :(
Having a fast car doesn't make you Andretti, Lauda, Gordon, or Garlits. Having Lennon's guitar or one like it doesn't make you John any more than having a Strat like Eric makes you Slowhand. A poster on a wall doesn't make you a buddy or a girlfriend. But it's all fun. Eh, wot?!
