An "American Musical Supply" catalog. You know, full of GAS inducing gear that you need money for. :P

I thought I’d read and share a little history today. I’ve lived in some pretty historical areas across this country so I’ve always held an interest.

For some reason, Jamestown, Virginia spurred my interest. I thought I’d brush up on my knowledge of this often talked about settlement.

I first read that Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in North America. Nope!

I knew that to be wrong. Well, not actually. I misread the article and I’m sure others are not aware or misled. It is considered to be the first ENGLISH permanent settlement in North America.

The Spanish, briefly, preceded that permanent colonization, and along with others, including the English, there is no end to debates as to who, where, and when with many making claim to bragging rights as have other cities and townships, etc. Adding to the confusion is the history of failures, battle spoils, abandonment and returns, discovery, and documentation amongst other things. We could look at other exploration such as the Vikings and, perhaps, earlier, Who knows what other digs will reveal. Some research is being questioned about possible Spanish exploration inland in Canada’s Pacific Northwest, but colonization doesn’t appear and isn’t likely to have happened.

I do know Virginia’s “James Fort“ was established in 1607. Port-Royal, Acadia / Nova Scotia was established as a permanent settlement by Pierre Du Gua de Monts and Champlain with their French colleagues. That was in 1605! Sorry, Quebec. I’m confident that it was permanent because I went to school with some of the ancestors of that community. In the 60s (and later) they still farmed on the same land across from the rebuilt fort which was destroyed by Samuel Argall and his Englishmen from Jamestown in 1613 after which the French settlement moved 5 miles to what is now known as Annapolis Royal (seized by the British and named as such in 1710). I went to high school just a short walk away, and so not only am I biased, but I’ve seen and experienced the evidence.

So, to my thinking, it is common to say popular agreement is that Jamestown is credited with being the first British permanent colony, and Port-Royal is the first permanent colony (French or otherwise) in the New World of long time permanent residence, both of which exist today.

Interestingly, early on, pirates were sailing these North American waters; but, most were not establishing permanent residence for good reason. Multi millionaire pirate Peter Easton established a land base in Newfoundland in 1612. Who knows? Had it not been for his reputation he might have gotten the award for beating Port-Royal’s and Jamestown’s reputation.

Now if one wants to really shake it up with exploration, you might want to look for original names and birthplaces as well as country allegiance as to how some of these New World explorers and pirates were often not how they are credited for or thought to be.

Indigenous migration has it’s own interesting history. You won’t find that on a truck stop cafe placemat.

Okay, now who made the first string instrument? Are you sure, or did you read that on a latte cup?

It's interesting. There are some tribes in the Northeast where every few generations another crop of kids is born with blonde hair and blue eyes in spite of the fact that both parents are natives. They talk of Viking blood entering the bloodline and not always by force.
