Hi all!

My first post here. Being the proud owner of an American Standard Strat for several years I decided it would be a cool new step in my hobby to build "my own" strat from parts collected together. As I am close to making a decision & purchase on some pickups I came across the John Mayer Big Dippers as these are quite different from what I already have, plus I really like the heavy but crisp sound coming from the John Mayer Signature model (played one in the local store).

On Ebay I came across these two auctions, selling complete pickguards:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/151716684652?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

http://www.ebay.com/itm/171832253197?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

I was hoping they would have come off of an original Fender John Mayer Strat but as you can see in the pictures, they show quite some differences on the bottom-side, telling me that they might not have. What is worth considering and keeping in mind selecting these pickups and how do I know (if possible at all) these aren't fakes? My guess would be that te best way to tell is to find some pictures from an original Signature Model, unfortunately I have not been able to find any yet.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing your suggestions :)

Hi thompsongast,

Welcome to the forum!

The pick guard hole pattern looks correct for a JM Strat, on both. It seems odd that the PG shield is missing from the one ad.

I found this ad on Amazon, and according to the seller, there are CS BD pups available? :?:

http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Artist-Pickguard-pickups-Patterns/dp/B00HTBJSTC

If so, maybe they are different than those on the actual JM signature Strat.

Hi Rockstar!

Thanks for the reply!
Great find on Amazon for comparison. Reading through the FAQ and reviews I think we have to conclude that these are fake BD pickups. Some people state the Ohm readings are different from the numbers provided by Fender, other saying they love the sound of its boosted mids whereas it is supposed to be scooped... On different forums I have read that Fender indeed never sold BD pups seperately, so being able as a seller to offer custom orders with the pickups means he has to take apart a lot of JM strats for a price even lower than American Standard Pickguards on Ebay, I just don't believe someone would be willing to do that. I'm afraid the buyers don't really know what they expected and just bought it because it says "John Mayer" in the ad.

Gives me more food for thought though, the amount of screws certainly is worth checking. I also thought that the missing PG shield is a bit suspicious since I believe those are pretty common nowadays. As long as I'm not 100% sure what is legit I'm not going to buy, that's for sure :P

If anyone else still has ideas/advice, please feel welcome to join!
