How would the tone of the standard pups that come in the mim standard be described? More vintage more modern etc?

I tend like the neck and middle... It is the bridge I am not sure on... I have listened to a bunch of alinco pickups... I am just not sure where ceramic magnets come into play... All I know is these pups are about 6.4k...

Jason,

pickups are most commonly described as "Bright"(more treble) and "Warm"(less Treble). The vintage and modern sound is defined by the number of windings on the coil. Vintage pickups have fewer windings which gives them a thinner sound. A ceramic magnet will be much brighter than an Alnico magnet, sometimes to the point of being harsh. A pickup with a ceramic magnet will not have a vintage sound.

I hope this helps.

I used to own a 2006 MIM Standard and the pups on that had more bite to them then a MIA Standard Strat did. I personally enjoy the MIM Strats and think they're great sounding guitars and would buy another one if I could afford it.

Let me start by saying here that while I'm a great lover of MIM Strats, I'm not really a fan of Fender pickups in general, MIM, MIA or otherwise, so please take my comments with an appropriate grain of salt. Likewise, as always, these are strictly my own opinions - please take them as such.

To answer the question here directly, I don't think MIM pups sound "vintagy" at all (neither do the stock MIA pups), so that alone would suggest "modern". To my ears at least, most of the Strats I've played over the past 20 years or so that have a genuine vintage sound have typically had their pickups replaced...two of the best sounding Strats I've ever played both had EMG's installed (and interestingly enough, both were also MIJ's).

I will say that of the 10 Strats I currently own, 6 are MIM and of those 6, 3 of them still have their stock pickups (and one of them is currently for sale)...I'll probably keep the pickups in the '99 Fat Strat, but sooner or later, the '95 is gonna get a set of Duncans or EMGs. Of the lot, my '93 MIM "Squier Series" has the best vintage sound. In this case the pickups are actually a set of -cheap- Guitar Fetish pickups that I got as a matched set for a whopping $15 a few years back (apparently they were a "special purchase"). The guitar does have an MIM bridge (with GF steel block) and vintage tuners and with the basswood body, that guitar really just screams "Surf"...crank up the reverb and hang 10 baby, LOL! She's really awesome for the SRV stuff to :-)

Again, just my own opinions...
