I got myself an American Vintage 70's reissue Strat a couple of weeks ago and love the guitar, but am not crazy about the pick-up's. Mine has the clear finished ash body and rosewood FB which is supposed to be bright, but it sounds kind of lifeless and dull with the stock pick-ups. Note sepeartion is not very good and I do allot of chording. Anyone know what pick-up's are used in this guitar? From the specs page all it say's is vintage style with alnico-5 magnets. Alnico V's are vintage?

Anyhow, I'm more than likely going to end up replacing all three pick-up's and thought I would get some recommendations from those of you who have tried some different models. As I said, I play allot of rhythm (chorded) music with a few short riff's thrown in so clarity and good note separation are important. I like a nice smooth sound and hate pick-up's that have harsh/piercing highs. Can you guys recommend some pick-up's that might fit my needs?

Thanks.

I think that you'd like the Fender Wide Range humbuckers for chording. If you could find an original set (rather than a re-issue set), I think that you'd be very happy with them.

The re-issues aren't bad, but the originals just seemed to have more of a full sound with great clarity.

If you want to stay within Fender's offerings, go for the 57/62 set. Ironically, they will surely sound better than those from back in the day which kind of sounded like your stock models now. The 57/62 set should definitely clear your problems right up and give you back what is missing. They are indeed, a very nice set. Note that the middle pickup of the 57/62 set is NOT RW/RP NOR is the bridge pickup calibrated to be louder than the other two.

Remember, although you have a rosewood neck, you have to consider the ash body too. So, anything else may be too extreme in one direction or another.

I really love my EMG SA active single coil set. It comes with 3 pups, all the pots wired up, and an output jack and battery hook up. It is a smooth, sweet, powerful set up with no noise. it made my Strat a much nicer guitar. True bell-like tones, and plenty of output. When you lower the vol knob, the highs stay intact. Just a really nice set-up IMO.
