Hi all,
I currently have Mexican Standard Tele and a US Nitro Satin Strat.
I am looking to swap the pickups on both and was curious about any possible recommendations. The pickups in my tele are great but can become muddy at times mainly im looking for a similar tone to the Mexican standard pickups but with greater clarity of tone. On my strat however, the American standard pickups are not my style of sound they are not well balanced and can be difficult to flow from setting to setting in. Im trying to find pickups with good clarity of tone and sparkle in the clean channel, and a good grit and growl when overdriven. looking for suggestions besides the tex mex or texas special pickups have played them both and way too twangy for my taste. thanks for all your help.

Hi rjbrown9133,

Your description of sound wanted for the Strat fits the "Fat 50s". You can try them at any retailer that stocks a current American Standard.

For the Tele, if you want the same sound but clearer tone, try lowering the pup heights.

I just bought a 2007 Hiway 1 a couple years back that was in mint condition and wondered why it was 7 yrs old but seemed like it had never been played. Had rough edges on frets that was very uncomfortable on fingers and thought maybe that is why. took my gtr kit file and gently did some work on it. Now it plays excellent and comfortable. I was told it had Seymour Duncan pups on it and I have seen on CL and other classifieds of Strats with SD pups and wondered if these were factory on this guitar or any American Strats for that matter.

You could check out the soundclips of Jason Lollar's pickups. Spendy but I sure like mine. They have one that seems to be an improved version of a Texas Special and others to choose from.

A short list of what the Highway One has:
Excellent post-vintage AlNiCo III magnet pickups with staggered poles and excellent output balance – not too hot, not too thin
A thin-skinned nitrocellulose finish – the more you play it, the smoother and shinier it gets, the more it feels and looks like an old friend…
An excellent mid-size maple neck and fretboard with that 70s “Jimi” headstock and lettering
A comfortable lightweight body
The excellent vintage-style tremolo
The always cool Fender Greasebucket tone circuit
Standard tuners and buttons
Decent mass to the trem block
Great-feeling jumbo-style frets

For the Tele, a Duncan Broadcaster and a DiMarzio Twang King.

For the Strat, a Fender Fat 50s set.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I'm sure there are lots of "favorite" pups for the Strat so I'll put me 2 cents in. As of today, and that may change tomorrow, I like the hot noiseless pups. The vids below are clean and dirty.

Have you listened to the SD Quarter pounders for Tele? They sound amazing from the video on S.D.'s website. Hear is a taste of great sounding tele pickups and a great player!
