Hi folks.

I went to adjust the truss rod on my Mustang Special, and, having no idea what I was doing, I unscrewed the pickups as well. Since I removed the guitar's innards, I realized that I cannot tell which pickup goes in which position. They look identical except that one is handwritten "48" with a check mark and "78987" on its back, and the other "45" with a check mark and "78957."

Also, five loose springs came out of the guitar. The springs don't have hooks on them. And no, I'm not certain I didn't lose one -- maybe there should be six, but I don't see another one.

Please help the hapless newbie!

Ed

OK, so the springs were for the pickups. I would delete this thread if I could.

Sorry for the bother.

And you want to adjust the truss rod?
Take it to someone who knows what they're doing!
It will end in tears if you don't!

If it ain't broke fix it 'till it is. :D

You can learn a great deal about how something works (or worked :? ) by taking it apart, but the first lesson should be to ensure you pay sufficient attention (and take check measurements) to ensure you can put it back together the same way.

Writing notes on masking tape labels before removing items is a good way.

Pushing screws into the positions drawn on a piece of cardboard can ensure they all go back where they came from.

Finally, in this day and age, you have a wealth of information literally at your fingertips with the Internet... something I would have loved when I was ruining things by taking them to pieces. Research the job before diving in. You may well even find videos on YouTube.

In answer to the original question, I think you are knackered now and need to have it repaired professionaly.
