There are a lot of other variables you have to consider when trying to copy someone else's tone. Things like the string thickness or material type, or even the height of the pickups can play a great deal in what sort of sound you will get. For example, I've met a few people who don't like the Texas Specials but have tried mine and they suddenly love them! I've put this down to the pickup's height as I noticed when I lowered them down more than normal, they sounded much smoother and more chimey. I 'd say (I'm only guessing so I could be wrong here), it's probably because they are over-wound and a lot hotter than normal so they don't need to be as close to the strings...(??). Anyway, my point is that even when you try them in a guitar from a shop, they will sound slightly different when you install them on yours. You will get a good idea though I suppose. Just keep those variables in mind when chosing! :-)

Just a few thoughts to consider...

As Dan999 said there, "There are a lot of other variables you have to consider when trying to copy someone else's tone". In the case of someone like David Gilmore, there's also pedals/effects and a lot of other things beyond the pickups. That said, the one single aspect of all of this that I think everyone over-looked is simply this; if you want to "sound" like David Gilmore, then learn to play like David Gilmour.

As I've said so often about Eric Clapton, the simple truth here is that regardless of guitars, pickups, effects, amps, etc., the reason David Gilmour sounds like David Gilmour is because...wow...what do ya know...he IS David Gilmour. If you doubt this, check out this Youtube vid and pay particular attention to the leads...

Gee...what's that he switches to for the leads? Is that a Strat? Is that the infamous Black Strat? Kinda looks like a Gretsch to me! And ya know what? He still sounds like Gilmour.

If you really want to sound like David Gilmour, then learn to play like him...study his style, his phrasing and his technique...that will carry you further than ANY pickup or gadget ever will. Once you have his style down, then throw in some distortion/gain and add a flange pedal and some delay to put the sound over the top...unless you have some really cheap sounding pickups, I wouldn't even worry about them.

As always, at the end of the day it's NOT about the gear...it's about the person using it.
