I just picked up a classic series 50s Stratocaster. I love the guitar only problem is the pickups are a little weak. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for pickups to put in to get a thicker and grittier tone pretty much to achieve the smooth warms of John Mayer's style pickups with the biting boost and grit of Eric Clapton's Pickups. Any suggestions, the only tie back is I would like to keep all the pickups Fender brand only. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I think any of the Fender Custom shop pickups beat just about anything out there, although there are some boutique pickup makers that do a fine job. My personal favorites are the Texas Specials. A great sounding pickups Alnico 5 magnets give that classic strat sound with enough grit if you need it. Like I said there are some others out there that make some good sets, I've got one strat with the SD Twang Banger along with Alnico II Pro's in the middle and neck position and it is such a sweet tone (and you get a bit of tele twang as well).

Have you tried raising the pup height, a little closer to the strings?

What kind of amp are you using?

Maybe an upgrade in that is in order.

How does someone ask a question like this and then just disappear?
The question was asked in early October...he got a suggestion and two questions...then never came back? LOL! Oh well...maybe we can help someone else that might read this.

I like the Custom Shop Texas Specials as well; HOWEVER...orvilleowner is not off base (in my opinion) with the question of available amp. Mine seem a 'little' weak through my Ultimate Chorus...yet big and strong through my Hot Rod DeVille.
And I don't think it is because the DeVille is a stronger amp (60watt tube vs. 100watt solid state)---I think the Custom Shop Texas Specials are designed more for tube over solid state.
I say this, because my MIM Standard Strat (with stock pups) actually sounds stronger through the Ultimate Chorus than through the DeVille with virtually same settings on both amps.

The OP seems to be a little busy, started three separate threads about the same guitar. Another one of those that starts a new thread for every little question.
