Hi All,

I have 3 Strat pickups that I bought a few years ago from eBay, and they were sold as Texas Hots.

Fender are a pain in the backside as they don't put specific serial numbers on their pickups, apart from the 016730 bobbin part number. So I wondered if you could all help me to confirm what these actually are?

Here are 3 images with meter reading for each (please note the wire colours):

Those do not look like any Texas Special Strat pickups I've ever seen. The TS's can be characterized by their staggered-and-beveled pole pieces, and their cloth push-back wire insulation. The bridge pickups are periodically marked by a red dot stuck to the bottom of one of the pole pieces and the neck pickup marked with a blue dot in a similar location. In all cases, the lead-in insulation is white and black for the bridge and neck pickups, yellow and black for the middle pickup. Occasionally there will be a Custom Shop sticker on the bottom of each bobbin.

Those in your pics appear to be something from a Squier Classic Vibe Strat or similar entry-level guitar.

The bobbin idenification number is the same on the Tex-Mex pickups
but the resistance readings are hotter on your pickups.
The colour coding is the same as the Tex-Mex other than the ground wires
which are black on the Tex-Mex pickup.
The White is your neck with top north polarity.
The Red is reverse wound your middle with top south polarity.
The Yellow is your bridge with top north polarity.
They are a hotter wind so i can't tell you exactly what they are
but should give you a fat sound.
Give them a go you'll find out.

FENDER SUPER STRAT 0139400/9402 made in Mexico (1997-2004)

0053162000 Superstrat Neck Pickup
0053163000 Superstrat Middle Pickup
0053164000 Superstrat Bridge Pickup

Special hot wind made for this guitar only, should be 2 black screws on back
of neck and middle pickup but none on the bridge pickup.
Colour coding is identical.

Highly regarded pickups hang on to them!

Matonaxe you are a legend! Yes the neck and middle have the black screws underneath, but not the bridge.

Thank god I didn't sell me for £20 on eBay!

Hey, I'll give you thirty quid......

Seriously, those are some really tasty pickups and it would be foolish to let them get away regardless of what anyone offers.

Thing is I'm left handed, and with the staggered pole pieces they won't really work?

The only situation I can think of that would allow you to use them is if your Strat body has the old "swimming pool" universal rout. If that were the case, you could rotate each of the pickups 180 degrees and (if necessary) splice in some extra lead-in wire that would adequately reach to the lugs of the pickup switch.

Your Welcome. You could take them in to a pickup specialist
and they may be able to reverse the stagger for you and put
some longer cables on if you need them.

I was thinking of buying a new pickguard loaded with electronics and the solder free thing where you just screw the wires onto the block. Are these generally ok? If they are then the leads will most likely be long enough anyway.

I prefer soldered connections in my Fenders, but Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan
are catering for those who aren't handy with a soldering iron.
They can't be all that bad so long as you get a nice tight clamped connection.
Besides we probably should all have a Seymour Duncan BYOP Prewired Liberator
Pickguard in our kit. Very handy for testing pickup combinations.

Just thinking back to the guy that sold me these on eBay 10 years ago, he obviously took them out of his super strat and changed them for TexMex one because that's the box he sent me with these pickups in.

Doh.

His loss, your gain.

Cheers.
