I've got this Fender American Deluxe Strat, 2 tone Sunburst, S-1 Switch, V-Neck.

Essentially it's a Version 2, with late 2003 dates all over it, Sep't. & Dec. on Neck & Body and DZ3xxxxxx serial number.

Consumer Relations says it "completed manufacturing in January of 2004", which is the release year of the V. 2 (50th Anniversary). Unfortunately, I didn't get the Anni. neck plate.

Anyway, the SCN pickups have 2 leads rather than the three I've seen on SCN pickups and I'm wondering what I'm giving up, if anything, without the 2nd ground. The S-1 seems to work fine.

Anybody knowledgeable about these?

I've read that the Samarium Cobalt magnets were difficult to work with and Bill Lawrence had to personally oversee the early production to ensure quality. Internet hokum or real?

If the pickups are functioning correct, I'm doubtful that anything has been sacrified. That they all feature dual lead-ins only should be of no import. I have two Strats with the SCN's but they're all the three-lead variants. All work as advertised (although pickup height is critical, especially the neck pickup).

Thanks again, there must be a reason for it but it's beyond me.

You might try asking Bill Lawrence himself -- he has (or perhaps, had) his own website. I had a question about the SCN pickups when I first discovered them and sent him my query via the contact point info on the site. To my surprise, he answered personally and in relatively short order.

Sadly, Bill passed away last November. You are fortunate to have corresponded with him.

I thought that might be the case but at my age and "mileage", the data banks are no longer what they once were.

I bought a set of SCN's as soon as they were available in the UK and mine are all two conductor. Perhaps Fender Support could clarify this?

Excellent pickups though. Even if they were hellishly expensive when I got them.
