Howdy,
I bought a set of Telecaster Texas Specials a couple of weeks ago, and will have time this weekend to do the surgery.
The included skematic shows a cap with no value. i guess its according to taste.
I'm wondering about doing the install so I end up with 2 volumes and no tone.
I've been through it with this MIJ Tele. SDs, blades, etc.
My main beefs are: 1. The muddy neck tone it originally had, and 2. The drop-off that happens when in the neck position.
The SD 1/4 pounder is good, but the neck counterpart seems weak and jazz box sounding. The blades just gave me 3 shades of the same underwhelming color.
If you have a set of these Texas Specials: 1. How do you like them and, 2. What type of install would you recommend? I'm ok with twang, but spank is better. :)
I'm not married to the 2 volumes idea.
Thanks.

I have a set. I didn't change the pots or cap or anything.

The only thing I do is keep them at a low height (far from the strings) because they are a little hotter than I usually like my single coils.

I have a set of Texas Specials -factory installed on a 2012 American Special Stratocaster and they are wired with one volume and a tone for the bridge and a tone for the neck pickups. One thing to keep in mind when wiring TS's is that the middle pickup is reverse wound/reverse poloarized so that when you switch to positions 2 & 4 (Bridge+Middle or Middle+Neck) you get a humbucker like effect. It's by no means the same sound as a normal humbucker but you know what I am saying right?!
I find these pickups really great if you're a Blues player -through my Blues Junior I get some real nice growling Fender strat tones! Evidently they were modelled on Stevie Ray Vaughan's pickups but if you want to get that kind of tone you have to remember he used very heavy gauge strings (like 12's or even 13's!) and I noticed a huge difference when I changed from just 9's to 10's (with heavier than normal bass strings). so string gauge does make a difference with these pickups. so does string height. They also don't need to be set quite as high as normal pickups.
Hope that helps mate! :-)
