As far as "bang for buck" goes, the best noiseless pickups I own are the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage types. They outshine anything from Fender with the possible exception of the N3's which I have not yet heard or played. The DM's come in several distinct "flavors" which you can mix and match to create a custom-voiced guitar. And they use standard 250K volume and tone pots so they're basically drop-in propostion. I own three Strats so equipped.

Thanks for the recommend Arjay. I've been partial to SDs in the past but will definitely check out the DiMarzio options. Your opinion is legend around here as far as gear goes. I was pretty happy with some stock American Standard Strat pickups a few years back. They weren't what I'd call special, just solid all-rounders. This time I'm shopping for something a bit special. It's been a while since I've had the opportunity so this will be fun!

As far as my tone, it's pretty basic. I always use a tube amp, touch of reverb, delay for a nice clean, sweet strat sound. Tight bass is always a good thing. The reason I chose the HSS this time is I like to stray into 60's distortion once in a while. Almost fuzz. I'm a lead player primarily as well.

After digging through several archived threads on various guitar forums I came across a reference to a now-discontinued DiMarzio pickup called the Virtual Vintage Pro, DP404. This pickup allegedly delivered a 200mV output signal, significantly hotter than a typical Strat single-coil. So I planned a guitar around that pickup in the bridge and began searching for one. After finding and buying it, I installed it in the new guitar. Complimenting it were a Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues (165mV) in the middle and a Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues II (180mV) at the neck. The guitar is the ballsiest, throatiest Strat I own. The single-coil squawk and spank remain but when cranked wide open through an OD with some compression, the output and tone rivals that of a traditional dual-coil humbucker. And like the humbucker, these pickups are totally noiseless. As well, the guitar looks for all intents and purposes like a regular Strat. There is no visual evidence to betray the fact that the instrument is anything other than a garden-variety MIM Fender.

Just some food for thought......
