Hi. i have a MIJ 50s reissue strat. low on luthier skills, fairly high on common sense and years playing (25 years). i installed the jeff beck hot noiseless neck/middle (sd hotrails in the bridge). i love the neck, sounds like a strat neck pup should. always hated the middle. it's like the tone knob is on zero, very muddy but i hear a nice quack trying to get out if only i had more treble. recently i used a fender lonestar deluxe and LOVED the texas special middle. a very bright quack which is so perfect to me. i want that. part of me wonders if i should get the texas special middle then, or if i have some type of tone pot wiring issue because surely the beck middle isn't meant to be this way. i've opened it up and rechecked the wiring 1000 times. even experiemented wiring it like the texas special middle is wired in the official diagram (it's different than the beck). nope that wasn't even close, i rewired back to how i had it. when i turn the tone knobs, i basically get no change in both the middle and bridge (but for the bridge i don't care since it's tone is perfect w/high enough treble). if i ring out a chord and turn 10 to 0 and back many times i do hear a slight effect, but nothing like it should be. am i wired screwed up? leaning against that since i triple checked the diagram. or is this how the beck middle is supPOSED to sound? i have an opportunity to get a texas middle w/o paying the 189 for the whole set, but don't know if i'm wasting my time and money on it. are there other beck people out there that have thoughts on their middle pup's clarity / treble? esp compared to the texas special middle's treble/clarity? or maybe u just know what i'm talking about anyway. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this. Any help greatly appreciated. ps: my neck pup's tone knob works as it should.

Welcome to the Forum.

Sounds to me like something is not wired quite right. Can you take a picture of it and post it here? Maybe myself or one of our other wiring gurus can see a problem.

Currently the Forum does close at night and on weekends.

Pics would help since you can't just bring the guitar to me to check out.
Although if you were local to me I would offer that.

that's cool of you to offer. i can't even get a freaken local luthier to see me in under 2 weeks, and they get paid! (i'm in Dallas, but from SoCal).

ok i've managed to get my cam back under much duress! i took a ton and chose what shows the best. i have more if these aren't clear enough but they should be. kept the original huge size, so if your browser resizes to fit screen, make it show not resized so u can see better por fever

To refresh, neck/middle are jeff beck hot noiseless
Bridge is SD hotrails

Issue is the middle. Let me know if you want sound bytes of how the beck middle sounds, as wired, compared to how the texas middle sounded (i recorded with it)

Can't thank you enough for your time and advice 8)

My old eyes are seeing it very clearly, SO....

How many lugs on each side of the switch?

Tell me what wires from where are going into the switch to what lugs.
Tell me what wires are leaving the the switch going to what pots.

Sorry to be critical mate, but that's a poor soldering job you've done there and that wad of insulation tape???

Just looking at the solder joints they dont look well done at all.

Maybe you want to check your soldering for dry joints, and better connections, and use shrink wrap instaed of a roll of tape!

I put a set of three Jeff Beck pickups into my son's Highway 1 and all three are sparkling clear and "quacky"

Best sounding strat in Cape Town!!

You flatter yourself. Your comments were insignificant to the close of this thread. The real reasons have absolutely nothing to do with you. Don't get me wrong, you definitely came off as a douche (pointing out the obvious, even though i already stated my soldering skills were "sad", then gave bs advice (shrink wrap over electrical tape?), then bragged), but that doesn't bother me, you get that on the internet and i wouldn't let that stop a thread where i needed help. Soldering isn't something every person is expected to have basic skills in. Spelling, on the other hand is. I'll make you a deal. You go back to school and i'll work hard on my soldering skills.
