Hello

I would like to try other strings than I'm used to. Now I'm playing with D'addario nickelwound 9-42 but I would like to try flat wound chromes 10-48 to have a warmer, mellow sound.

Now my questions are:
1) Is there a risk that these strings are too heavy for my guitar?
2) Does the kind of strings have a big effect on my tone?
3) Do you have other suggestions for strings with a warmer tone?

grtz

Heavier-gauge strings will make the guitar sound louder since there is more mass vibrating across the magnetic fields of the pole pieces. As well, the human ear generally perceives heavier strings as sounding more "full" in comparison to the lighter gauge strings. Most modern Fenders are capable of accommodating a variety of sets in varying gauges though tending to one extreme or the other may require adjustments to the nut, the overall set-up or, in the case of a Strat, some tweaking of the bridge "float" and/or the trem claw. For modern rock, blues, or country I'm doubtful that flat-wounds will yield the vibe you seek. They're actually best suited for traditional jazz or rockabilly styles.

On the topic of strings and tone, I know strings get dull over time, so the question is who sets there preferred tone on their gear based on fresh/new strings and who prefers the more used string sound for their tone.

Dull is not the same as warm to me. Besides, if strings get old they become more difficult to tune. So I don't think that it is a option to leave old strings on my guitar for a warmer tone :p

I slowly worked my up in string gauge starting at 9's until I finally settled on D'Addario ECG24, 11-50 flat wound strings. Other than typical minor setup adjustments, nothing major was required. I like the tone of the flat wound strings and really appreciate the smooth feel. I also feel that the flat wounds last longer the round wound strings.

D'Addario Chromes Jazz Light, nice and mellow tone, although you can still get some great twang out of a tele. If you want to ease into it, try the half-rounds, I think very under-rated string, very versatile. I would try those first, they feel a bit strange at first but once you get used to them I think you will prefer them to round wound.
