Technically they are to replace the squire pickups in the strat I'm building but it wouldn't upset me to replace the pickups in my 1993 Am Standard Strat and move its pickups over. I like the sound of the Am Standard pickups. How do the Tex Mex pickups compare to my Am Standard pickups? I'm looking at those or some GFS alinco ii or "boston blue" pickups.

I think the Tex Mex are supposed to be similar to the Texas Specials but built in Mexico. (I have a Nashville with them and a tele loaded with Texas Specials, they aren't exactly the same but similar). That said, I would expect the Tex Mex pickups to have more midrange, and less quack, slightly thicker with less crispness compared to your pickups. If that is what you want, it is hard to beat the price for them.

I would go to YouTube and search for "strat tex mex" and you should find plenty of demos with different amps, to get a feel. I found one decent demo in clean mode here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWooank6t_U

If you do like them, personally, I would be tempted to find a set of them preloaded on a good pickguard (commonly white) for around $100 (used) to $140-150(new) , then you can just swap out pickguards without doing a lot of soldering. Just three wires to solder and you are done.

Thanks. I ordered them. We'll see when amazon gets them in stock.

I need to buy a new pickguard and controls so I'll likely wire one up for the pickups. Trying to figure out if I really want a tbx in it or not.

I need to scout around and figure the best way to wire up my Nashville. I want to be able to run the neck and bridge pickup together, preferable in parallel (easy) and in series, which is trickier with the 5 way switch. I would likely just throw in a mini toggle between the volume and tone knobs, I have a couple lying around. Then I will have every sound a regular tele with 4x switch AND a strat can do, within a reasonable margin of error.

Well, that was horrible. Didn't have the right gauge wire and couldn't find it. My weenie soldering iron was too weenie and the one I picked up broke.

So, lots of cold solder joints. But for the moment it is working.

Sounds great. They won't be moving to my american standard but they (charred electrics and all) are way better than the squire pups they replaced. Nice.
