I recently purchased a used Squier with Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pickups. The pickups sound fantastic in switch position 1,2,3 and 5, however when in position 4 (middle pickup and neck pickup together), the sound drops significantly and becomes very "tinny". In trouble shooting the situation, I decided to try the pickups in my Tex Mex strat to isolate whether it might be a problem with the electronics in the Squier. Alas, the problems continued when the pickups were installed in the Tex Mex strat. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?

Thank you,

-- Bill

Welcome to the Forum.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the neck and middle pickups have been switched.
You seem to have the wiring thing down and are confident in your soldering. Try swapping the neck and middle pups and see what happens.

The reason this comes to mind is in my LP I have the magnet flipped in the neck pickup and when both pickups are selected together the volume drops and the tone gets a little tinny sounding.

Thank you Chet. Well, if the pickups are properly coded with the Red and Blue Dots, then I have them in the correct positions (with the middle having no such colored dot). I may try to switch them, just to continue the diagnostic process. I look forward to additional thoughts on the topic. Thanks you!

Bill, I just installed a Tex Spec (neck only) pup in my new strat and am having the exact same problem. Did you ever figure out the solution??
Thanks

Never mind. I figured it out. Polarity needed to be reversed. All is fine is Stratland!
