A while ago an old guy had this for sale locally, advertising it as "broken pickup from old fender stratocaster". Among the words we exchanged were "I used cloth tape because it wasn't working and I thought the pickup tape would help, but it didn't." :D :fp: So, here she is. No leads, orangeish wire, pretty minty. VINTBAGE Fender strat pup, or was he trying to offload a cheap copy?

The rather high G-String pole is a good indicator that it is a genuine Fender pickup. But going any further will be more difficult. Orange wire usually means formvar, which eliminates a few possibilities. Reading the DC resistance would help to narrow things a bit more, but if it's open you'd have to get it fixed first. And depending on where the break is it may need a rewind anyway.

I think it just needs new leads. Thanks for your help!

So...

WOW. Things are looking up. It's not dead!!! And reads 6.14! AND I was able to get the duct tape crap off without breaking the wire! The wire is bright orange.

SCORE!

If I can get some verification that this is indeed a vintage strat pickup, it's off to be sold... It'll help fund the jag. ;)

Formvar wire was only used up to 1964. After that it was plain enamel all through the '70s. So if your pickup is a vintage pickup, it's from 1964 or earlier. The biggest challenge will be separating your pickup from a vintage reissue. The good news is that 6.15k is about right for a late '50s to early '60s stock Strat pickup. You need to find an expert for this...
