I've been thinking of buying a cheap squier or Mexican strat and putting in some new custom pickups? Is it a waste of time to do this or could I make it a great sounding guitar? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Very good pickups help to have good sound . But cheap Squier Could be little too cheap ? Mexican must be better. For these two models , wich year are you looking for ? News ones are better.

Squier Classic Vibes could be very good ; I try one and I was very surprise . And I have a lots of American Fender guitar.

More important about sound is a good amp with good ( not top of the line ) pickups.

Thank you for your reply- I probably would go with a mexican strat. One question, what is to stop someone putting any pickup configuration on a strat- for example if I was to put a Seymour Duncan humbucker into the bridge, a telecaster pickup in the middle and an Irish tour pickup in the neck would I get all those different tones on the guitar?

I suggest you carefully measure the overall thickness of the guitar body and the depth of its pickup routs before buying any upgraded pickups. Many of the entry-level brands (Squier, Bullet, Affinity, etc) use thinner bodies and shallower pickup routs, which makes installing some pickups problematic at best and impossible at worst.

You can put anything you want, just some work to do sometime. Telecaster bridge pickup need base plate

Absolutely.

Mods of any type should always be preceded by proper planning -- saves time, money, and aggravation.
