Hey everyone,

I have come to your community with a question. I've been wanting a P-Bass and, due to a lack of funds for anything proper, was convinced by a very low price to buy a Precision-Style Bass that is supposed to be equipped with have actual vintage Fender pickups from the 70s. I know, sounds kind of unlikely, but I did hear that a lot of people change the pickups in their 70s P Basses to EMGs, so I thought maybe it could possibly be true...

Anyway, the bass arrived today and first thing I notice when plugging it in is that the Tone Poti doesn't respond. Then I looked at the Pickups more closely and could find absolutely no serial number of any kind on them. They also have a magnet glue to the bottom, which is making me doubtful, and overall seem kind of too new to be anything from the 70s.. After a lot of time on Google and various sites, I have still found no good information on Fender 70s Precision Pickups and have not been able to help myself. So I have come to you to ask,

is there any chance these might be actual Fender Precision pickups (if not vintage then at least some kind of reissue)?

Also uploaded a photo of the pots, maybe someone recognises them..

These pickups are very cheap pickups not American made by Fender . Probably not Fender made.

The pots are not Fender pots , cheap imports.

Any picture of the bass ? A fake for sure :(

Thanks for the response, i guess its what I feared. I just took the neck off, will put back together and post a pic in a minute.

Anyone know of a website that shows pictures of Fender precisioon pickups of various years? Did Fender ever make precision pickups with the magnet stuck on to the bottom like that?

Here's some pics. Sure its a cheap copy, seller said it was Japanese and from the 70s but that doesn't seem true either. The only thing that looks oldish are the tuners, but it was literally the promise of old fender pickups that made me buy this on Ebay, with nothing but a poor photo and a very poor description. Seller was very friendly over the phone and seem to know his stuff but now it all takes on a different light. At least I fixed the tone poti soldering, hopefully it sounds a bit better now..

+1

Totally bogus.

There's nothing "Fender" about those pickups.

I would say that it does look old and seems to be in pretty good condition. But everything about it screams Asian-made.

Thank you to everyone whose had a look and commented. The bass plays, suprisingly nice, and the sound of the pickups is not bad (output is quite strong), but I still haven't got the tone to work and so far I am not impressed.

I am going to take this up with the seller tomorrow..There was never a claim that anything but the pickups where Fender, but it seems everyone agrees that they are not Fender (at best Squire, which is totally different in my book).

Unfortunately even with further hours of googling and other internet research, I have not been able to find much detailed information on Fender precision pickups and their design throughout the years... Anyone with any further info on that topic? Would like to know if their winding/magnet design changed much in the various eras of the precision..

IMO fender pickups are all all the same with years if we talk about american made. Fender pickups look the same since the beginning . If you can see a picture of Precision Bass pickups , any year, you see what they look .

Most of the time , they could have very very small thing only expert can see between them with years.

I talk about the "classic" Precison Bass not the Deluxe or any other serie.

Don't forget the electronics ; pots . They are cheap import , any Fender picture can show you the good ones.

Ok, thanks again, especially Stratele52, for the quick and helpful responses. It looks like my first forage into the world of Fender P-bass was a failure and I will be looking to return this cheap copy to sender, but I shall be back and next time with more money! I guess this experience just once again confirmed the old saying: "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

At least I found out that there is a very helpful community at fender.com.
