I'm putting Fender Fat 50s in my old strat for an overhaul. I love to have an "Old" sounding strat but always like of course to have a more powerful pickup in the bridge. I really like EJs bridge sound on his 57 in the last couple of the years and he has a DiMarzio HS-2 wired single coil in there. But on the other hand I love Seymour Duncan pickups and I have faith in one of their best selling pickups, the SSL-5. Does anyone have any real life comparisons or have used these pickups in their setup.

Can't speak for the dimarzio, but I have a Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge my "black strat" replica I built , and it sounds sweet to me. It is the one that comes in the David Gilmour strat. Can't say if it's good for you, but it nailed the tone I wanted with that particular strat.
My setup is fat 50's in the neck, a 69 in the mid, and an ssl-5 in the bridge.
Not sure which would be better, since you're wanting a more EJ tone.
If your interested this came from Phil Taylor in the "Black Strat" book:

The SSL-5 used to be called "SSL-1C", the C was for Custom Wound. David has been using his original SSL-1C in the bridge of his black strat for a long time. It was installed in the Black Strat just after the recording of The Wall and has been there ever since. Before that David used a DiMarzio FS-1 which he used from the recording of Animals up to the recording of The Wall but once he tried the SSL-1C he said he liked it much better than the DiMarzio, Phil Taylor made the switch and it's been there ever since.

I don't know what the difference would be between the DiMarzio FS-1, and the HS-2, but
it seemed like an idea for ya 8)

Yeah I've been using the Gilmour strat vids to get a good listen to the SSL5. I'm a huge Gilmour fan and I've read alot about his setup and pickups and stuff. It seems strange to me that with this strat project I wasn't intending to build a Gilmourish guitar and get I've ended up with a pickup combination that's closer to his. I guess that's just how it works out sometimes haha I think the SSL5 is gonna be a winner to be honest. Seymour is the boss :)

Well as you know then, there is more to a Gilmourish tone than just guitar pu's. Sticking to the original question, I like the SSL-5 more than just that reason. I like the "growl" I can get, and is very versatile for classic rock, blues, and also a very nice clean sound. All my strats have different pu's, but my black strat is the only one with a mixed set, and by far the more versatile of all my strats.

I ended up ordering the SSL5 last night, I've listened to enough soundclips to realize that there is still that strat sparkle in clean settings which is what I really wanted as well as alot of power :)
