With the exception of models that have a humbucker pickup, why are all 3 strat pickups usually the same? I realize that the position on a guitar gives them a difference sound from each other, but why not use completely different pickups in the 3 locations. For instance, an American Deluxe Strat has 3 - N3 noiseless. Is there a reason why these are not 1 - N3 noiseless, say at the neck, 1 - 50's fat strat middle, and 1- Tex Mex bridge? Not saying this is the right combination, just wondering why all 3 pickups are N3's

They did used to be all completely identical, but these days you'll normally find each pickup is tweaked a little in terms of tone and output, so you'll have a hotter one in the bridge which might have a bit more in the midrange, middle might be reverse wound, neck might be a little more scooped in the mids, etc. So they may all be (for example) N3's, but each will be wound slightly differently, so you end up with a very balanced palette of tones which are all usable without changing your amp settings too much.

Absolutely nothing wrong with going with completely different pickups, of course. Can't even remember the last time one of my Strats had a matching set - I normally end up with a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge, an Alnico Pro in the neck, and something random in the middle which I never actually use aside from as a mix with the bridge or neck, so normally stays stock. :lol:

Easy ;

They did not need to be not the same to have different sound . Just location on the body is enough.

Leo Fender want to built good and cheap guitar . Using same pickups give what he need.
