Hi!

I have recently installed one of these in my Telecaster, and I have a bit of a problem.
http://www.guitarfetish.com/Alnico-Fatb ... _p_76.html

When I select the neck PU on the 3-way switch everything appears to work. But when i select both PU I only hear one or both at VERY low volume, and with the switch on bridge I get both PU?!
There is also i slight hum that disappears when i touch any metal, that would be something with the ground.

I soldered white(+) to neck position on the switch and black(ground) to the back of the volume pot, exactly as the PU installed before.

Does anyone here know what might be the problem? This is the first time I replace a PU in my guitars.

Cheers!

You probably made a mistake in wiring or bad solder.

Do you have a photo of your wiring ?

here you go, it's the white cable on the switch and the black cable to the left on the pot.

The soldered grounds on those pots don't look too healthy......

I removed the new PU but the hum did not go away, maybe I need to redo the whole thing right from the start?

Now I have resoldered the PU and all ground to one point, I also shielded the guitar and what a difference :) Dead silent, and ground is now OK.

But there's still something wrong with the switch, when I select 1 and 3 the tone and volume is great, but on 2 there is almost no sound at all? Very strange..

It worked perfectly with my old PU and I have not changed anything on the switch.

Bad solder or switch defective ; It is a cheap import switch , better to replace by a good one.

You do a good job , congrat.

+1

Install a US-spec CRL or Oak/Grigsby and your problems will likely disappear.

Quality pots and switches can make or break a rewiring job. Always use the best that you can afford.

So, I received 4-way switch yesterday and I am sort of confused.
I was to follow this instruction but my neck PU do not have a cover.

http://www.guitar-mod.com/wiring/tele4way.gif

Does anyone know if I'm supposed to wire ground to switch or to "ground"? Or is it possibly some kind of wiring-mod that is required to make a proper ground?

Below is what I ordered, and the picture on AllParts(below) vs. the included diagram(is the same as the link above) tells separate stories considering wiring.

http://www.allparts.com/assets/images/p ... 00-web.jpg

EDIT: Noticed that the wiring from allparts is for a 3-way switch. So I only have first instruction to work with.
Also found this one that's the same:

Forget the ground for neck cover if you don't have a cover .

Follow your first diagram , without neck cover ground . It's same than the last diagram but easy to follow IMO

I connected it all as described, and on separate PU it sound rich and full as it should. But I still have problem with serial and parallel, the sound is kind of trebelish. I loose all middle and low when I select both PU at the same time.

Maybe I should just leave it as is and let someone take a look.
