So, i'm a really big clapton fan, the reason why i went for a stratocaster and why i chose a 2-tone sunburst (and because i totally love it). now however i've seen this video where mister Clapton plays the Brownie tribute strat and the sound it's so how i wish my sound would be like without setting me back 17k $ (tribute strat + twinolux). This is the video for those that haven't seen it

So what i was wondering, i know theres that circuit in there that enhances the tone even further and i hope i can find a tech around here that can put that in my guitar someday, but for now i'm wondering, sound based what pickups (available) would come closest to the ones in the brownie tribute? cause i'm dying to get that sound eventually.

sorry for the long post for this really short question, but thanks in advance.

Fender's Custom Shop '54 pickups would likely be the closest sonic match to the original Brownie's original pickups.

And what circuit would that be?

The mid-boost and TBX are part of the modern Clapton guitar. It is not part of the sound of the Brownie guitar and in fact will sound very different from the Brownie sound. Mid-boost will make the pickups sound like humbuckers. Definitely not what you want if you desire the Brownie tone.

But the tribute brownie is routed with a TBX and mid boost, why is that then..not arguing that you're not right here don't want you to think that. and i really like the sound he has in the little video i posted in my first post and that's well what i'd like to get close to. thanks for the replies so far

No, the Eric Clapton Tribute Strats (Brownie and Blackie) are not routed for an "Elite" PCB.

Only the modern signature series do have that feature.

Both guitars feature a set of custom-shielded American Vintage '56 single coils.

Who said the tribute Brownie is routed for mid-boost? It is an exact replica of the original Brownie guitar which predates mid-boost and TBX.

Certainly not.

The EC Tribute replicas lack off a PCB rout to accommodate the Elite electronics and a battery hole in the rear side of their bodies.

That's the whole idea of a tribute guitar. It's an exact replica of the guitar as the artist played it "back in the day". :D

That choice makes perfect sense to me.

Hey people, thanks for all the replies so far, it was indeed my mistake i must have had the brownie replica specs and the blackie specs open and mixed them up, the tribute brownie indeed doesn't have the Mid boost and TBX control, but however how could i get close to the sound of the Custom Shielded '56 Stratocaster pickups? i've seen someone reply with the vintange 54's, would these work out the best for this sound?

thanks in advance and thanks for all the replies so far.

A lot of EC's "brownie" tone was the result of the amp(s) he played during this era. You might factor that into the equation......

id go for Custom shop 50s pick ups, they should be non reverse wound or reverse polarity on the middle pup. they would be best. also, have the bridge pickup disconnected from the tone circuit (makes a big difference compared to modern strat wiring, if your strat is modern that is)

I found on my strat that on position 2 (ie bridge and middle) using a non rwrp pick up with the middle tone control wound down a tiny bit can get you those very classic strat tones. also a old style 0.1uf cap will make the overall tone a bit woodier, especially good on ash bodies that are naturally bright. a .022 might be too bright overall but compliments the alder bodies better. could go for a slap bang in the middle 0.05uf cap. you definitely need classic style 50's pickups, nice low output nothing more than 6.0kohms for me. 5.6 to 5.8 k ohms would be perfect

The sunburst guitar he played during his 70th birthday shows was based on Buddy Holly's original 1955, according to Daniel Dearnley. Eric looked for something different apart the usual combo of pewter and black.
