Hi,
I need help authenticating a Texas Special Stratocaster neck pickup. I got this on *bay, and from the photos on the site, it looked OK. When I received the item, I thought something was fishy. Please see the photos and tell me what you think. It reads 6.18K, the sticker only has adhesive on the top half, so the bottom have isn’t attached. The seller assures me it is from a complete set, and is the original owner. I’m considering returning it because I can’t determine the authenticity. What would you do?
Thanks,
JHMPCAT

Looks pretty much identical to the one I have sat on the desk in front of me, and reads almost exactly the same (mine reads 6.19K) on a multimeter, so I'd go with genuine with only photos to go by.

I've seen a lot of sloppily applied stickers on the custom shop pickups from new out of the box, so not much to be concerned about there.

One of the things that caused doubt was the "custom shop" label.

The Custom Shop label is upside down, and I think it should read "Fender Custom Shop" and not "Custom Shop USA".

Also the blue paint dot appears to be on the opposite side, as compared to other samples I have seen.

You are absolutely correct, and I didn't spot that! Yep, different sticker wording, and the blue dot is indeed in a different place. This is what happens when I try to compare objects without coffee.

Soldering also looks a little sloppy, but again, I've seen that on plenty of Fender pickups over the years.

Everything else looks legit though - If it was me, I'd fit it temporarily and see what it sounded like before raising any issues. A good pickup is a good pickup, regardless of paint or stickers.

These things are not all that unusual. Over the years I've seen both types of stickers plus another one as well. Stickers get stuck-on, and Red and Blue dots are painted on most likely pretty quickly in the process. I doubt that Fender has any established rule of manufacturing that says stickers must be stuck-on a certain way.

Also, ask yourself this question... Why would anybody even want to fake this? I think the pickup looks legit from the visual standpoint. Now let your ears be the final judge.
