My 1998 American Standard B-Bender came with stock Fender Tele pickups and a Texas Special Strat pup in the middle. This was before they started calling the instrument a 'Nashville' B-Bender.

Anyways, after a few years, I found a matched set of Fender Tele pups out of a Japanese model. Now ... my info from back then, was that Fenders built in Japan, were a better quality than our American Standards so I tried the pups. They are in there still today.

I guess I'm kinda bored with them now and would like some of your thoughts on the other Fender Tele pickups available to me ... only FENDER ... no aftermarket. Can anybody point me to some sound clips anywhere? Being a 40 years of Blues performer, I'd like to get into something like Roy Buchanan's old 'Nancy' tones.

I realize 'Nancy' ended up with aftermarket pups from Mare BUTTTTT... she was born with Fenders.
What say you?

"Nancy" never had Don Mare pickups. Rather, Don created his pickups from hands on investigation of the OEM(s) in "Nancy".

If you can find a real 1953 Fender Tele pickup, you may or may not get close to the tonality, etc. due to the imprecise (by today's comparison) pickup building techniques of back then.

There is no 1953 RI Tele pickups offered by Fender that I'm aware of where again, it could sound completely different than what is in "Nancy". Your best bet would be investing in Don's clones.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I guess I'll re-train myself to use a lot less words
OK ... so how about this ... What Telecaster pickups would have been used in the 1953 model??
1. something like the Original Vintage set??
2. something like the Nocaster set?

How do any of you owners of '62 USA re-issue pups feel about them?? Although mine are from a Japanese Fender Telecaster '62 RI, I gotta say they sound closer to American Standards versus anything vintage.
:)
