I'm a novice who bought his first Strat from a friend a while back. It's a 96 American Standard. I'm trying to figure out the pickups that have poles of varying height; the D and G poles are relatively high while the B is low. I assume this was done to boost the volume of the D and G. Are these staggered pickups? I would like a Clapton like sound, are these the pickups I want? Were these stock, a factory option, or after market?
Thanks,

Yes, what you have are staggered polepieces, most likely what people refer to as 'Vintage Stagger.' this is to compensate for the differing string outputs, so that they all play at the same volume, because of heavier guage strings used during that era, in particular wound G's (which is why the G pole is rather high) The amount of stagger varies from pickup to pickup and in a few models, can be individually adjusted to suit a particular string guage.

as for the model you have, cant tell if they are stock or not, many pickups are staggered. best bet for a clapton sound, is to get a fender tweed voiced overdrive or amp and boost your midrange frequencies with an eq pedal. even with stock pickups that should kind of get you in the park :)

hope this helps

Thanks a lot, that does help. My poles do not appear adjustable at all, and I use Ernie Ball supper slinky strings with a solid G so I'll just live with the elevated G volume for now. As for the amp, I have a Mustang II modeling amp that I believe can be reprogramed through the computer, so maybe they have a Tweed model for it. Lots to learn. Thanks again.
