Hey guys!

I was looking at the Fender Texas Specials because those are the pick ups in the Fender SRV guitar. I want to hear your guys opinion on the best sounding pick ups for that awesome SRV sound!

Any tips/advice/opinions???

P.S. I'm in university and I would prefer pick ups that wouldn't wipe my bank account. Even so, all suggestions are appreciated :D!

Thanks again guys! Helping me will surely give you some karma points ;)

Hello!

Here's a link to a thread with a good discussion about SRV's sound. There's lots of names in that thread you can research for more info about pickups, the discussion is mostly about his amps and settings!

Enjoy!

Thanks but I'm looking to start with the guitar first.

He used Standard Strat factory pickups in his main guitar, nothing special. It's his customized amps and pedals is where that "tone" came from.

If you investigate you will find that most of the great recordings featuring a Stratocaster were on a stock model. I don't just mean SRV, I mean everyone.....

Okay well I have a Fender 1997 plus. It has gold lace sensors in it but I don't think they can give me the sound I am looking for. Any ideas on what to swap in?

Bizarrely, closest I've heard anyone ever get to the SRV tone was some guy at a blues festival playing a Strat with gold Lace sensors through an old Tube Screamer into an ancient blackface Deluxe - he absolutely nailed it.

I don't think the pickups are that important to that tone, to be honest, as long as they're above a certain level of quality and sound 'Stratty' enough.

As mentioned above, the amp and pedal side is where most of that tone comes from - as well as from the fingers, of course.

Stick a set of Texas Specials or throw in some Lace Sensor Emeralds.

If you're seeking for that Texas Roadhouse grit that made SRV famous I'd recommend a Custom Shop Texas Special pickup set.

+1000

Forget the Valvestate's, the Line 6's, and the Mustang's!

Get yourself a serious amp.

And learn how to use these two tone controls......

I always "zero out" my front-panel controls after a gig or rehearsal.

Yet there's the incontravertible photographic proof.

You won't find those controls on your Squier 10G.
