Is this normal for an American Tele approx 18 months old to have the neck pickup start peeling, specifically the chrome plating? It looks defective like it bubbled when made and wiping it caused the bubble to crack and peel back.

It's rare that chrome plating will peel off, even on instruments that are decades old. Return to your dealer for repair or contact Fender directly.

I called Fender and the rep acted as if I did something to the guitar or in some way caused it. He told me it was not under warranty so I was out of luck. I then took the pictures and e-mailed them to customer support and no reply after two weeks. I offered to install the part myself. This is a simple task for me. I'm an electrical engineer and electronics hobbyist.

I forwarded the correspondence to Guitar Center and no reply also. I have a thirty day return policy and I'm on twenty days now. I really like this guitar and can't believe how I have been blown off. I just cant justify paying retail for a part I shouldn't have to pay for.

How much does it actually cost Fender for this pickup? I also have an American Stratocaster and Les Paul Studio. I've always liked my Fenders better but I'm losing confidence fast when it comes to their support.

I can see the pictures so let me know if you still can't

Were a dealer and a manufacturer to jerk me off in such a manner, I'd return the instrument and wash my hands of both -- forever.

That's absolutely shameful!

Well I was going to buy the cover until I got the following response from Fender customer service:

Hello Darrell,

I had spoken with you on the phone about this earlier and you were aware of your options. You could have this replaced by an authorized service center or acquire the pickup from a parts dealer. You had the option to return the guitar to your dealer but I would guess by this point that time has lapsed. If I remember correctly, you bought this guitar second hand from the Guitar Center and this would mean there was no warranty on this instrument from the date of purchase. Furthermore, we never see this happen on our pickups and typically this is caused by some type of outside source to make this chrome peel.

I can understand that you want a guitar with original parts and want this replaced but there is nothing that we will be able to do for this situation at the factory level.

My response:

Michael

Actually I do have the option to return the guitar and just spoke to guitar center and will be there Saturday. You are a complete idiot to say I did something to make the chrome peel. Chrome does not peel when plated properly and the only way to get it off is to grind it off.

You don’t stand behind you product and I promise you after this response I will never buy a Fender product again. I plan to post this on the web. And by the way everyone that responded in the forum said this is not supposed to happen and further that they have guitars much older with perfect chrome.

Congratulations you just lost a customer for life over a fifteen dollar part.

Best Regards,

New “Gibson Les Paul Fan”
Darrell Collins

Now I'm going to return the guitar after speaking to Guitar Center and they have a really nice Gibson.

I have to agree with you, Darrell.

Not exactly a "Kodak moment" for FMIC.

Sad, really......

I agree wit you too Darrell ,

Chrome normal plating is fool proof. All car have some chrome plating and go to dust ,rain and snow with road salt here in Canada and never peel.

I think the lack of experience or training led Michael to suspect I was trying to get something for free. Michael also failed by not even responding to my e-mail that included photos. The last thing Michael failed to do was own up to the fact he made a mistake and correct the issue. In any case I have taken care of it myself with an added cost of only nine hundred and eight dollars.

I've taken a completely different view about how to handle this. I realize I haven't been playing long enough to justify what I did but I have to say it was the Telecaster that won, not Fender customer support. I went to Guitar Center and spoke to the sales rep. He offered my money back or the same guitar new for a few hundred more. I can't complain about that and started trying different Telecaster models. I was blown away by the Standard Deluxe Telecaster.... I have a tungsten with maple neck ordered.

Now I have a warranty so the N3 better not start peeling. Just a shout out to Michael, if it does I'm gonna sit on your porch and bother the neighbors until it's fixed.

Just an update.... Kept my word, here's my new Tungsten Deluxe Telecaster, now I'm ready to bother Michael's neighbors.

Guitar Center stepped up and I just wanted to say I'm really happy with them.

OK anybody...I just tried swapping out the black pick guard on my Am Del Tele with N3 pups. Now my neck pup went out. I’ve checked everything. Sometimes it cracks a bit, but nothing. And now i have a grounding buzz on top of everything else. Nothing is disconnected anywhere. Tele was noiseless and beautiful for a year until last month. I bought it new from Guitar Center .com. It is one of the first American Deluxe Teles with N3 pups. Trans red Ash. This is a drag. I think the pickup is bad or shorted. When I press on one end of the neck pick up it signal comes in and out. It’s the end that has a thin copper ground going from the red pickup base to the just under chrome cover. Anybody have an idea about what’s happening. I’m getting ready to buy a new N3 neck pup.
