Got a question about a funky situation i got when hooking up this Fender Fuzz Wah. My chain starts with these three:

Boss octave divider > Fuzz Wah > Fuzzface

Thing is I figured that i could activate the Wah portion of the Fender pedal and activate the Fuzz Face along with it.... however for some reason the Fuzz Face refuses to operate if i switch the Wah on. Otherwise it works as soon as wah is switched off. Hmmmm.  What could be cause?

Fuzz Faces are notoriously funny about what comes in front of them in the chain. Wahs in particular are always fun - you get anything from nothing at all to wild crazy howling resonant weirdness, depending on the pedals involved. Sometimes they'll be perfectly fine!

One of my Fuzz Faces hates one particular Dunlop wah - it won't even pass a signal if you put the wah in front of it, it just sits there going "WEEEEEEEEEEEE" at a pitch which varies according to the pedal position. All good fun.

Either stick a buffer between the wah and the Fuzz Face (for example, your Boss pedal, which has a buffer built in), run the Fuzz Face before the wah, or consider fitting the Fuzz with an input trim pot if you don't use maximum gain tones, as just dipping one of those slightly usually makes the pedals play nicely together.

Thanks! Maybe my Mxr Phase 90 can go in between. If that doesnt permit it to function
then Ill try the Octave pedal there.

Another question, does anyone run their wah pedals after their distortion and overdrive pedals? I hear this can fatten up the wah sound.

Worth remembering that a buffered pedal (Boss etc) doesn't even need to be on to sit well between a wah and a Fuzz Face, but you do lose that lovely touch sensitivity of the FF circuit when a buffer is involved.

A lot of people fit a small buffer circuit into their wah (very easy to build your own, such as http://www.muzique.com/news/wah-pedal-buffer/ ) if the use a Fuzz Face (or any similar vintage style Fuzz which relies on loading the pickups for part of the tone), that way the buffer only activates when the wah is on, giving you the great response of the fuzz when off, but avoiding weirdness when on.

I've never liked the sound of distortion before a wah - sounds a bit too exaggerated for me, but others love it - takes only a few seconds to swap things around and find out!

Thanks for the tips. I tried the Boss octave in between both and it allowed the Fuzzface to function! Soundwise the best signal chain ended up actually starting with the Fuzzface.

So Fuzzface> Fender Fuzz/Wah > Boss OC2 octave
