I bought a set of the pickups to replace the ones that came in my Highway One Tele. The wiring diagram is for a 4 way switch that they dont bother to tell you. These now come with 3 wires out of the neck pickup which shows the white to the switch and the black to the switch and a yellow to the pot. The bridge shows white to switch (the wire is yellow) and black to pot, which is right.I called Fender and the best the rep there could come up with is: I guess you wire it the way the diagram shows. Here is the right way to wire them for a standard 3 way switch: white to switch, black (which is the coil ground) and the yellow ( which is a chassis ground) both go to the pot with the black (coil ground)from the bridge pickup. I got this info from my tech at Sweetwater that got it from his contact at Fender. You would think that Fender would have the forthought to include a diagram that shows both 3 and 4 way switch wiring as much as they charge for these. The pickups are a great upgrade over the stock pickups. Oh and another thing, the screws they give you for the neck pickup are the ones for srewing the pickup into the body. If you dont have you stock screws you can use humbucker screws or grind the ends off a little. I hope this :D will help someone else so they dont have the hassel I did.

I realize this is an old thread, but it sure saved alot of hassle for me. I just put a set of Custom Shop Texas Special Tele Pickups in my Nashville Deluxe. What a difference!!! Waaay richer tone from the neck pickup and the bridge isn't quite so harsh, and still has that "tele twang". Glad I spent the coin for these, they were well worth it.

I have been struggling with this as well. I am glad I came across your post, bluescat. For one thing, I didn't realize that there even WAS a 4-position wiring for a Tele. I am definitely going to set mine up that way.

I knew there had to be a reason for having 3 wires. Black was obviously ground and white was obviously hot, but I had no way of knowing if yellow was some kind of alternate hot, or some kind of alternate ground. It sounds from what you are saying, it is indeed an alternate GROUND. Very meaninful.

The light bulb coming on for me was realizing that they put the extra wire in to adapt the neck pickup to a series coil situation. This means you need the output of one pickup going into the ground of the next pickup. That way the signals from the two are added together. But you can't just keep the common ground that way. If you did, the signal from the first pickup in the series would just run off straight to ground (no output whatsoever). That's why they had to split up the ground.

And I am in COMPLETE agreement with you on the wiring diagrams for the Texas Special Tele pickups. Fender needs to provide a wire output diagram for the neck pickup to clarify what the three leads mean. I would say it similar to what bluescat said: white = hot, yellow = ground, black = alternate ground (for series coils). They should also make clear that a 3 position setup allows you to treat yellow and black exactly the same, solder both to ground. The alternate ground comes into play for the series setup, where it (black) goes to the 4 position switch.

I am very keen on setting these pickups up with a 4 position setup now that I know it is possible. I have a series coil selection of a Shecter I own, and I am very fond of it. Thanks again, and I just wanted to recap your information in my own words for my benefit and hopefully the benefit of others.

This the the 4-way diagram. I wasn't clear if this was posted before, but it should help.

Does Fender realize they put a link to the main page and not the specific problem? I now have a 4-way switch from Allparts. I'm going to try the one posted.

Thanks,

Rick
