I fancied the '52 Hot Rod thing for my Am. Std. Tele and with the standard pots it was just too mushy for my ears. I hunted out the 375K items actually fitted to the '52 HR and they really opened up the SM-1. The downside was the standard bridge PuP was even brighter and that bit harder to tame. Have you considered the 'Duncan P-rails? It really is very good with excellent 'bucker and P90 tones with the standard 250K pots (the AlNiCo coil is OK but a bit generic). I personally far preferred it to the SM-1 for its extra versatility.

Just my 2C.

Mini HBs were designed around 500K ohm pots. Your best bet is to change your volume pot to a 500K ohm and then solder a 470K ohm resistor at the terminal of the pickup selector switch where the hot wire of the bridge pickup is connected to, with the other leg of the resistor being soldered to ground. This will make the bridge pickup electronically 'see' a very close to 250K ohm pot; 235K ohm to be exact where the difference is indiscernible. The tone pot can be left alone as this is not critical, unlike the volume pot.

Thanks Martian, I was thinking about doing the same thing to my tele. I dig the bridge but not so happy with the neck. I too was wondering about which pots to use. I was also wondering, could I put a push pull to split the coil on the mini? :?

You're welcome.

Yes to the push/pull pot.

Hey Martian, when I picked up the resistors I noticed there were 470 1/4 watt and 470 1/2 watt. I bought both, does it matter which one I use?

Thanks, M

That's 470K, I presume.

No, the wattage is irrelevant in this case.

Yes 470k. Thank you for the info.

Btw, I have a Strat HSS with 500k vol. and you suggested a 470k resistor between the neck Pu and the switch, it works killer.

You're welcome.

Put a resistor between your middle pickup and switch too.
