Three questions. First, my Strat always buzzes when I have my hands off of the strings. I've been told that there is nothing I can do about this because of the way the coils are wound. I've had the wiring checked, and made sure it's not a connection issue. Is this true? Or is there something I can do to get rid of the buzz? Second, what is the best way to get corrosion off of my single coil pickups? Third, are the Seymore Duncan Pearly Gates pick-ups still produced? Mine has a crack in the plastic, and want to replace it.

That's normal single coil behavior.

Turn your volume down when not playing or use a noise gate type pedal.

Ok, that's what I thought about the coils. I do use a noise gate. Now, how about the corrosion clean up & Pearly Gates P/U?

No idea on cleaning 'em. The pole pieces you mean? I'd guess a green scrubby and some e;bow grease would clean those.

Pearly Gates.

The stock pickup would be a Pearly Gates Plus, not a regular Pearly Gates. It's voiced differently than the regular PG -- lower output and somewhat brighter to better match the single-coils in the neck and middle.

The PG+ appears to be discontinued.

Here's a quote from Duncan's site describing the differences between the PG and the PG+, and his recommendations for a pickup that's similar to the PG+.

"The main difference in these pickups is that a Pearly Gates has Alnico II magnets, while the Pearly Gates Plus has Alnico V magnets. Alnico V magnets tend to give a brighter, glassier tone, while Alnico II magnets tend to have a warmer, rounder, more mid-rangier tone. The closest pickup available in our regular line to a Pearly Gates Plus is a '59 Model with 4-conductor cable. The '59 is an Alnico V pickup with a wind very close to that of the Pearly Gates Plus. The '59 usually comes in single conductor cable, but it can be ordered with the 4-Conductor wiring option."

Most retailers have the 4-conductor version in stock -- it's not something you have to have custom made or anything like that.

**************************

A hard rubber eraser can clean light rust/oxidation without leaving any scratches on the poles. Try that, then move on to green scrubby if needed. Put tape on the plastic covers if you use a scrubby as it'll take the gloss off them.

Avoid steel wool.

If the PG+ works, maybe instead of replacing it because of a cosmetic crack you might consider replacing one or both of your single coils with some sort of noiseless replacements?
