Hi, I'm having an issue with the CS Nocaster pickups I've installed in my U.S 1978 Tele. Each pickup on it's own sounds awesome, but together (ie.switch in middle position) the guitar sounds very mid-rangey, almost nasal. I've tried wiring the output leads of both pickups together straight to the output jack (bypassing all electronics) and the problem persists.
Researching the net so far, led me to think it could be a phasing problem, so I reversed the polarity of the bridge pickup. This made no difference.
Do I have a dodgy set of new nocaster pickups? Could just the magnet or just the winding be the wrong polarity?
My tele is stock with modern wiring (as opposed to the blend option).
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Welcome.

Based on your post, it is a phase problem. There is a two step process with reversing the polarity of either the neck or bridge vintage type Tele pickup. It is your choice which one of the two you choose to reverse to rectify the situation.

In the bridge pickup's case, the plate on the bottom of it is part and parcel of the grounding system. Not only would you have to reverse the wires, additionally, there is a little lead wire from the plate going to the black wire's eyelet on the pickup which must be switched to the white eyelet on the pickup. In the case of the neck pickup, again, not only would you have to reverse the wires, additionally, there is a little lead wire coming from the bottom of the cover to the neck pickup's black wire eyelet. This has to be switched to the white wire's eyelet. Remember, you do it to your choice of one of the pickups only, not both. If it were me however, I'd do it to the neck pickup as it is much easier.

Good luck and you're welcome.

Given that the OP has a set of Nocaster pickups from Fender, I find that it would be rather odd for them to be out of phase with each other. If that truly were the case, it would be better to return them to the seller under warranty rather than muck about with the wiring and risk damage.

thanks for replies :)

@martian - when I reversed the polarity of the bridge pickup I swapped the ground link on the base plate, as well as reversed the wires. Like I said, it made no difference.

@bluesky - yes it was a new set of nocasters. I probably should have returned them, but it's too late now because I've made solder marks on the back of the bridge pup. I was pretty sure it was a phase issue because each pickup sounds great on it's own.

I read that pickup height is more critical on nocasters than many other pickups. I might try lowering them. If that doesn't fix it, I guess my pups are faulty :(
Any other suggestions much appreciated...

Have you ever heard a Tele with a set of Nocasters? We can't hear what you are hearing unless you post an audio clip. Given that, have you considered the possibility that there is nothing wrong with the pickups and they sound the way they are supposed to sound?

well, you're right I haven't heard nocasters before so perhaps there is nothing wrong with mine. However, my original '78 pickups sounded very similar individually to my new nocasters, but with the switch in the middle position they had a nice chimey well rounded sound, whereas my nocasters don't. I would've kept my original pickups if possible but they had become microphonic.
Incidentally, lowering the pickup height made no difference. I'll probably end up taking the guitar to a pro tech for a second opinion. Like you say, there may be nothing wrong with them. If there was a way to attach some sound clips to this forum post I would give you a listen. Thanks for your help, very much appreciated.

Raise the neck pickup, when pressing down E6 string on the 21st fret, the distance is about 0.80 mm from the bottom of the string. Do the same with the first string, the distance should be around 0.60.
Follow the procedure with the bridge pickup. The measurements are 1.5 mm(E6) and 2.30(E1).
That did for me. :D

Modern wiring wont make a difference, something is off. I also own a Nocaster set and they rule. Middle position is very glassy, not out of phase sounding at all.

Double check the wiring at the switch, it should be wired like this...
