Try it and find it out for yourself. This is the single most important step in tuning your guitar to your sonic needs.

Cheers

Further away the tone gets "woodier", IE. A bit darker and a bit more pleasant to listen to, takes the "Ice Pick" tone out of the bridge pickup.

Closer to the strings the tone gets brighter and can get a bit harsh.

Remember Fender height recommendation is the closest to the strings you should be without the strings and magnets in the pickups interacting in a negative manner.

A good place to be is Base 3mm. Treble 3/32", or 2.5mm.

This will give you five good distinctly different tones in all switch positions.

Because it's about taste, not about wrong or right.

+1

The pickups on none of my guitars are anywhere close to the "recommended" settings.

I have three Strats. 2004 MIA, 2006 MIM, 2008 MIA. All three sound a bit different. All have the same basic setup. All are stock pickups on the MIA's. I have a set of 2002 MIA pickups in the MIM.

The MIM also has a replaced neck with an Ebony fretboard, it is my baritone Strat. Pickup height is slightly different because each guitar has it's own "sweet spot" where the pickups sound full and rich in harmonics. I have never had pickups that sounded their best at Fenders recommended height. Each guitar's tone is different by nature.
