I have a few quick questions for any of the wiring experts that might be hanging out here. I'm trying to decide if the S1 switch will do what I would like for it to do, and to see if anyone has a wiring diagram somewhere or knows where to find one to achieve what I'm trying - because Fender doesn't have one.

I have Seymour Duncan pickups in an American Standard HSS Strat, typical 2 wire single coils and 4 wire humbucker in the bridge. What I would like to do is a bit different than the deluxe setup.

When the S1 is OFF, I'd like to have the traditional strat wiring by having the humbucker split in the bridge in position 1, everything else would be normal parallel switching.

When the S1 is ON, however, I'd like to have the full series humbucker in position one, everything else would be normal switching except that I'd like the combined coils in positions 2 and 4 to be in series instead of parallel.

This doesn't sound complicated to me, but I can't look at the diagrams I've seen on the HSS S1 and figure out how to reduce that mess to what I need.

If anyone has any advice, or can pass on a link to a diagram like this I would be grateful. Kind of long winded for my first post, sorry!

Howdy & Welcome!

Hmmm... Yeah, I'll have a crack at that! :D

I've just done a rough sketch that might work but before I go too crazy can you confirm your after the following:

S-1 Off

1 - Bridge (split coil)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

S-1 On

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (full HB) & Middle (in series)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

Let me know if the above is correct and what tone controls you'd like and I'll have another go and see if its do-able.

Andy (loves a good wiring challenge!)

Everything you have is exactly correct except that with S-1 On I want position 2 to be coil split as well with the middle in series. Almost like the S-1 on is an exact mirror image of 2 - 5, except in series. Basically S-1 Off is traditional Strat tone, S-1 On has some fatter humbucking options. I put the revised S-1 On below:

S-1 On

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in series)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

Ideally, I'd like to have position 3 be that weird Gretsch type setting from the real S1, where 3 = Bridge (split coil) & Neck (in series, out of phase, tone cap) but I'm having trouble figuring out just the simple parts of the S1 to the super 5 way.

Generally, I only use the tone pot associated with the neck or middle - so in reality of the first tone pot was assigned to the neck and middle in any position that would be awesome. I suppose I could wire the last tone pot to the bridge humbucker. I'll probably never use it though.

And finally, not to complicate it further, but I've been told that the Alnico II Pro humbucker in the bridge needs a 500k pot - so if that's the case then apparently I'll also need to know where the resistors need to go between the coils and the volume to keep them calm (is 470k the value, or 510k?).

Thanks for looking at any of this! It's been driving me nuts.

Man, that's a tough order! I believe I can do everything bar the Bridge (split coil) & Neck (in series, out of phase, tone cap) in Pos 3, S-1 on.

You'll want a pair of 470k resistors if your using a 500k S-1 switch pot (thanks to forum user Martian for that one!). I'll include that in the diagram.

Give me a few days to draw it out (as I have a few others to bosh out first) and post it here for your perusal. You'll want to get it checked by someone who knows what there doing before you dismantle you current wiring.

I can't thank you enough for even taking the time. Like I said, it's been driving me nuts!

I definitely don't need the position 3 neck + bridge phasing tone cap madness, so no worries! It was one of the few positions on the Deluxe version that I thought sounded cool, but the chances of me actually using it enough to justify the work is very slim - so I'm good with the way it was first described!

Howdy!

Sorry for the late reply, but work commitments sap a lot of my free time these days.

Anyhoo... Here's your very own Big Hairy Wiring Diagram! :D

Image

As I mentioned earlier, I'd strongly recommend you have the above diagram checked by someone who knows what they're doing before dismantling your current wiring setup.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on!

Andy

Hello, I have a similar request. I also have an American Standard HSS Strat which is in need of an upgrade. My new pickups should be coming in the mail soon enough and I still haven't figured out how to wire my S-1 switch the way I want to. This was the closest thread I found online and I need some help :|

I would like it wired as:

S-1 Off:

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (full HB) & Middle (in series)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

S-1 On:

1 - Bridge (split coil)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in series)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

Pretty much the same as jaspinwall's but with the switch on, the humbucker is split. I don't use the parallel options and if it can be done with 1 volume and 1 tone knob. (I'm the type of player to hit the volume knob when I play  )
Any help is appreciated!

Howdy!

I'll take a closer look at this on the weekend. In the mean time, can you let me know what pickups you'll be using?

Cheers!

Andy

Wow thanks Andy. Take your time, no rush!

I'm getting Bare Knuckle Pickups. A "Blackdog" humbucker in the bridge (4 conductor) and 2 "Mother's Milk" single-coils for the middle and neck. Always pleased with their quality so I decided to upgrade my favorite guitar, my strat! :D

Howdy!

Please accept my humble apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but life in "Andy-Land" has been complicated lately....

Yes & No... Yes its totally possible to wire you Strat as requested and I know how to do it. No I still haven't got round to transposing my sketch into a pretty diagram for you.

Its on the top my list and should get done over the next few days. That's a Big Hairy Promise!

Cheers!

Andy

Hey Andy, don't sweat it man! Life get complicating and hopefully it gets better!

I was just hoping you'd get back sooner because recently I have been playing with the parallel options on the stock strat settings and they're actually becoming useful. If its not too late and if it makes it any easier, to wire it exactly like Jaspinwall's configuration but have the S-1's on/off switch the opposite (and minus a tone knob.) I was looking at the diagram and still can't seem to figure the S-1 switch out. Thanks so much for going through all the trouble!
