Spend time playing it without effects first--get to know the guitar itself. Every guitar is a least a little different, so get to know the guitar unadorned first. Then as you've heard what the guitar can do by itself, (including playing it unplugged as well), try some effects.

A good way to do this is to try several out at a store. Try them with a guitar & amp as close as possible to what you use. But avoid buying flashy sounding ones just for the sake of sounding flashy, buy them because you'll use the. (So asking that question here is a good move.)

As far as what effects to get--that depends on what type of music you play.
Most guitarists seem to have some sort of overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal. If you get one, make sure it fits your style. They can range from pure fuzz to sharpened attack, and many have a wide range of sound available.

Delay/Echo/Chorus, etc are all variations based on the time delay of the original note--so which to pick first? Pick what fits your style again. Try each type and see what you like. If you can afford it, buy one of each type.

Then there's flanger & phase shifters--also similar sounding--but their ranges are different. These are rpobably effects you won't use all the time though.

Then there's wah wahs, envelope filters, volume pedals, etc, etc.

Many effects are variations of other.

And while you're at it--how will you power these? Batteries will get expensive and they don't normally come with adapters. One option is the power supply, where you can hook up several effects at the same time to one plug. You'll also need short cables or plugs to hook up any effects.

So go to a store--take along another musician if possible and experiment. Have fun, use your ears, and make sure the final decision is yours.

Wah pedals can be fun when you're starting out on electric, just makes it even more exciting!

8) It depends on what type of music you like to play, I would suggest going to your local music store (Guitar Center if you have one close) and plug into them all to see what they do for you. Just don't do what I did, I bought 4 expensive pedals and a wah, thinking I HAD to have them to sound good, along with an expensive case. Well, as I discovered what type of music I like to play along with the tone I like. Now all my effects pedals are in the case in the closet. The only pedal I use is the Boss chromatic tuner and I do use the 'fat' footswitch for my blues junior and the 2 botton footswitch for my 65 twin reverb. Good Luck! 8)

Maybe go for a multi-effects pedal?

If I were you, I would wait and buy a good mulitfx like the boss gt8 or the line6 xt3, they might not sound as great has having the real deal but you have a world of things you can do,then when you decide which fx you like most buy the real ones, if you decide pedals, i would go for a tubescreamer, a crybaby wah, chorus and delay

Personally, I went with a multi effects pedal, partly because I didn't really know what I wanted and partly because I like experimenting with different sounds. It was a cheap way to get my fix.

What effects do you have on your amp? For example, if my amp didn't have reverb I would get that first. If it does, most everyone goes for distortion next (unless you play jazz). Just my two cents.

The Fulltone OCD pedal fattens up the Strat's tone really well. This is currently the pedal that Robin Trower is using. I have also purchased this one. It's more of an overdrive, but it can go to some distortion if you'd like also, really called the Fulltone OCD Overdrive/Distortion.
