I see 150's...250's....and 350's

But, I also see the same size strings available for each (I think).

So, what is the difference between a #46 (lower E) in a 150R, 250R, or 350R?
Isn't a 46 a 46 no matter what?

Thanks

Jim

I use the 250's because I like the sound they have. I beleieve they have a loose outer wound and sounds differently than the 150's. You really have to try different strings to find what you like.

I'm not really sure about the number codes because the descriptions on them sound all about the same, but I know that some Fender strings have different ends, either a ball or a bullet, and the bullet ended strings are more suitable for guitars with strat trems/bridges...

Other than the above, I've been trying to figure this out since 1967!

Hello Intonator,

150 = Pure Nickel
250 = Nickel Plated Steel
350 = Stainless Steel

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies.
I was using the stock 250L's in 9-42.

Wanted to try 10-46's and the shop only had the in 150L's.
Put those on, and am really happy with the tone.
Maybe not quite as bright as I want, but very nice.

Hello Bss

Here's my subjective point of view

150's most vintage sounding
250's all around best
350's least vintage sounding

On a side note, it's been reported
on this forum that the stainless
strings wear frets down quicker,
I have no experiance with this
cause I don't use stainless strings.

Hope this helps .

Cheers.

If it is true that Stainless strings wear out the frets faster, would it be better (for fret wear) to use pure nickel strings instead of nickel plated steel strings?

Hello Syelops

I really couldn't say.

That's a question I've tossed around,

myself and friends see no accelerated
fretwear from 150's or 250's.

Cheers.

Hello C-Hawk,

Mostly all electrics are interchangeable
with all electric guitar strings.

They just offer varying qualities
Tone
Comfort
Sustain
longevity
appearance
cost
to name a few.

Play many and you'll find a favorite.

Cheers.

I've always used stainless stell strings, except for the original strings that came with the basses. My oldest brand new bass is an '87 that I bought in '89, no fret wear on it. I do use Medium gauge too - .45 - .105 (sometimes .110). Others have told me the same info you said. I don't know, just lucky I guess. Another ones are the Flat wound, they suppose to eat up your frets too, but over a year I have them on my VM and no freat wear. I play the bass everyday, sometimes 2 hrs at a time. I do like the stainless steel strings tho.

Hello PowerJazzBass,

I thought twice about adding the side note,
but I've heard it enough so I figured I pass
it on.

Maybe it's just urban myth.

Cheers.

A couple other urban legends I have heard about strings is that all plain, or unwound strings are the same, no matter what the brand. Ans also I have heard that while there are many brands of strings, there are only half a dozen or so companies that actually make strings, so many of the "different" brands are just different brand pacakaging on the same strings. May be a myth though, I don't know.
