I thought that there was a problem with my Vintage Noiseless pickups, because the poles were at odd heights... the mid and neck pickups' second string is actually lower than the cover.

Then I saw a picture on the Fender website with the same thing.

Could anyone explain what the purpose is?

They sound great, I just thought it was odd.

Hello Pohatu771,

I've got them in my 2000 Amer/deluxe,
the poles are the same way. I suppose
Fender engineers figure thats best for the
best tone.

Cheers.

That goes way back to the original "Vintage Stagger" which lowers the B-string pole like that to balance with the others. Wound strings tend to demand higher poles than plain strings do, and back in the '50s the first 4 strings were always wound, so those poles were typically a bit higher than the last two.
